Description
Seldom have we had so much fun visiting a venue as we did the Corona Yacht Club. "Yacht Club? Here?" you’ll say as you drive past the Rancho’s 10,000 palm trees. The name, as it turns out, was bestowed upon this place with a wink. There is plenty of water and there are boats, but they’re not exactly what you would expect.
Set amidst 20 acres of fragrant citrus trees and graceful palms, the Club offers an extraordinary range of event sites, from a tropical Mexican cantina overlooking a large lagoon to a gorgeous candlelit dining area under the stars. This unusual locale was designed by a successful architect as his private playground, which he used primarily for racing model boats and celebrating his love of Mexico. Over the years he enhanced the Club’s appeal with meandering garden trails, whimsical accents, antiques and comfortable amenities. By the time the current owner purchased the property the site had "gone public" and was already making its mark as the most unique special events location in the desert.
The cantina and its adjacent dining area offer 3,200 square feet of covered entertainment space—all of it delightfully open, airy and next to a two-acre lagoon. There’s an ample service bar, and everything is decorated with Mexican-style furnishings and antiques. The atmosphere is rustic and romantic, evoking the lazy days of summer vacation or a Club Med retreat. A band of Mariachis or a string quartet can easily serenade your guests from a large, 1,000 square foot entertainment dock that juts out from the Dining Area. For a solitary moment step onto the small observation dock that extends into the lagoon, and commune with one of the resident ducks or geese floating by. At the opposite end of the lagoon a tiny islet of palms, ferns and flowers tempts you to explore the rest of the terrain.
The Corona Yacht Club is one place where you’ll definitely want to be led down the garden path, since each twist and turn yields a fresh surprise. Cross a footbridge and discover a waterfall and koi pond; the Hammock House invites you to kick off your shoes and have a swing; a hutch filled with antiques is a window into the Old West; a large palapa turns out to be an aviary, with rosy-cheeked cockatiels, nesting finches and parakeets chirping away. Other thatched huts along the way can be used as food stations, additional bars or to house a magician or gypsy fortune-teller. Your journey through Never-Never land culminates in another waterfall, with colorful dragonflies darting through the cool spray. At dusk the lagoon becomes positively enchanting, as a pink sunset fades in the Western sky and the first pale rays of moonlight glimmer on the water. After nightfall lights glowing in the trees along the edge of the lagoon are also mirrored on its surface.
If you can tear yourself away from the action at the lagoon, follow the swath of lawn beside the Cantina to the Croquet Court. Here, manicured greens, blooming rose bushes, and an herb garden create a charming enclave. On one side there’s a raised deck with a gazebo, where bridal couples love to exchange vows.
Perhaps the Club’s most enticing spot is The Grove, a spacious clearing nestled between rows of towering palms. As evening approaches the air is redolent with the sweet perfume of citrus blossoms, and a long banquet table set with elegant linens and place settings is bathed in candlelight. In this secluded desert oasis the stars seem close enough to touch, and whether this place is or isn’t a real yacht club is the last thing on your mind.
