Colony Palms Hotel

Why We Like This Place

Just below the surface of the newly revamped and fashionably chic Colony Palms Hotel lies a hint to its colorful past. A slightly risqué Art Deco mural, recently unearthed in a hidden room beneath the restaurant, was once part of the notorious underground speakeasy, casino and brothel established here in 1936 by Detroit mobster and Purple Gang leader Al Wertheimer. His then-named Colonial House, with its unique lure of desert beauty, proximity to Los Angeles and frisky debauchery, was catnip to Hollywood celebs like Bogie, Gable and Lombard.

Today, although the gambling—and brothel—are gone, the allure is definitely back after the new owners' two-year, $17 million renovation spearheaded by Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, designer to such stars as Cher, Elton John, Vidal Sassoon, Kid Rock and Christina Aguillera. Combining a Moroccan-Mediterranean aesthetic with rich exotic textiles, old Hollywood glamour and cutting-edge amenities has resulted in a sophisticated mosaic with just the right balance between trendy and serene.

The property, hailed by Condé Naste Traveler, In Style, Traveler, The New York Times, Town & Country and virtually every style-conscious publication, lends itself beautifully to being a memorable wedding location. For the ultimate in privacy and flexibility, you can buy out the 56-room, two-story hotel with its brand new spa facilities and acclaimed gourmet restaurant, or if you have a smaller group—or budget—you can pick and choose from a variety of lovely spots for your ceremony and celebration.

The main entrance to Colony Palms is through a wrought-iron gate to a tile-floored breezeway with tropical ceiling fan and a large Buddha statue (the first of many Zen-like statues you'll see on the grounds). A curved archway frames the centerpiece pool area straight ahead. A walkway to the right will take you and your guests to the quiet Garden Area for your ceremony. There are eight casitas with private patios in this area, which would make a perfect place for you and your bridal party to get ready before you exchange vows, facing either the fountain or distant mountains. The garden's lawns are punctuated by feathery palms, colorful hibiscus and purple-bloomed "sweet memory" shrubs. You can also have your cocktail reception here, or move your party to the fabulous Pool Area.

The huge pool is truly the focal point of the hotel. It's anchored on one end by an enormous sofa lounge (long enough and deep enough for major cuddling or group conversation) and on the other by striped cabanas, which can be used for private tables or even a cozy rehearsal dinner. Off to the side is an intimate fire pit, surrounded by greenery, for quiet talks or to use as a cigar lounge. And behind the pool is the signature Purple Palm Restaurant, a "wink" to the hotel's infamous beginnings. With deep purple walls, Moroccan-tiled floors, Mediterranean-colored chairs and tufted banquettes accented with oversized lampshade chandeliers, the restaurant's setting, like its menu, revels in sensory satisfaction. For anything other than small groups, dinner is usually served outside around the pool, and the romantic restaurant becomes a hip lounge and dance club.

As to that secret room with the deco mural… well, someday, that will be the setting for a modern-day speakeasy.
