Rancho de las Palmas

Description

In describing an event facility, the word "oasis" gets thrown around pretty loosely, but Rancho de las Palmas, with its spring-fed lagoon, thousands of palm trees and fifteen fountains, comes as close as we’ve ever seen to fitting the literal definition. Personally designed and executed over eighteen years by owner Dr. Robert Cassar, this unique private estate is also a registered turtle sanctuary, botanical garden and antiquities museum. Everything here is handmade and an outpouring of Dr. Cassar’s seemingly unlimited creative energy. Fortunately, he has been kind enough to open his magnificent hideaway to us.

The focal point of Rancho de Las Palmas is the huge lagoon, with its three sparkling fountains and a marvelous island, where a bridge leads from the shore to the island. Weeping willows and stalwart palm trees make for a tropical setting on the shore, and a spacious serpentine deck, any part of which can be set up for entertaining, borders the lagoon. This is a great place to sip a mai tai with friends and enjoy the view.

Couples often get married in front of the double-tier waterfall, or on the short flight of brick stairs leading to the deck. The stairs have an overhead arch and side railings in ornate wrought iron, perfect for twining with flowers. From here, it’s only a few steps to the Pavilion for the reception. The Pavilion is quite charming as is, but for a more formal wedding, organza can be draped from the center post to soften the look. A nighttime celebration would be especially glamorous here, since virtually every structure (the deck, island, and Pavilion) is strung with twinkle lights.

If you’re planning a large ceremony, you’ll be thoroughly delighted by the estate’s newest wedding site. Here, the bride walks down a 100-foot-long aisle and through a series of five ornate archways, all of which can be festooned with flowers and tulle. Vows are exchanged beneath the last arch against a backdrop of tropical foliage.

One of the greatest pleasures of being at Rancho de las Palmas is taking a stroll around the grounds. As you do, notice the unique architectural details. On the deck, wood railings change to wrought iron, and pathways that start out brick turn to cobblestone, then to concrete poured in imaginative designs. Classical fountains rub shoulders with abstract stone structures made of river rock and brick, some decorated with leaping dolphins. However, if you think this sounds like an artistic hodgepodge, you’re in for a treat. It all harmonizes beautifully—the manmade structures seem to have grown as naturally as the palms, pepper trees and flowers that surround them. And if children are included in your celebration, they’ll be enchanted (and occupied!) by a Swiss Family Robinson-style tree house, complete with slide and swings.

In addition to weddings, Rancho de las Palmas has hosted numerous movie shoots, luaus, casino nights and auctions. If you can’t stand the thought of renting a stuffy ballroom or crowded banquet hall for your event, try Rancho de Las Palmas—it’s as refreshing as an oasis in the desert!
