Description
Club Del Monte is an art deco jewel set amongst 25 acres of sprawling lawns dotted with oak, cypress, and pine. Originally built in 1880 as the grand Hotel del Monte, it was destroyed twice by fire and rebuilt. The present imposing structure (which is the 1926 incarnation) resembles a Spanish-Moorish fortress. It remained an elegant hotel until 1951, when it was acquired for the Navy’s Naval Postgraduate School. As you can see, this facility’s history is long and illustrious.
Your guests will step back in time and feel like royalty, when welcomed with cocktails in the Quarterdeck Lounge. This majestic lobby was built on the scale of a castle foyer, with soaring 30-foot ceilings which are crosshatched with hand-painted wooden beams. Two stately rows of stone columns grace both sides of the room, framing a towering floor-to-ceiling window that overlooks the estate-like grounds.
Proceed to the ballroom for a formal dinner-dance; you’ll be transported back to the era when Jean Harlow, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard danced here, and when water cascaded down the room’s main attraction: an ornately tiled fountain that dominates one wall. The fountain and the elaborate tilework bordering the floor-to-ceiling arched windows at either end of the room bring the Moorish influence inside, and give the space a spicy, exotic ambiance. Other art deco details include the lacy plasterwork ceiling, huge wrought-iron chandeliers, and matching wall sconces. French doors opening onto the terrace and overlooking the European-style rose gardens are the finishing touch.
For a buffet luncheon or catered business meeting, La Novia Room, with plaster walls and rich wood trim, offers the elegance of the ballroom but on a more intimate scale. It opens onto La Novia Terrace, an atrium with a rustic brick fireplace, window benches and a brick floor. There are outdoor settings, too. The European-style rose garden, with boxwood hedge-lined flower beds, gravel paths and sculpted trees, begs for a romantic Victorian wedding. Or, if you’re planning a western-theme party, we think the historical Arizona garden, planted with cacti, yucca and lots of California natives, is just the place. Club Del Monte offers a treasure-trove of site options, and as you’d expect from a Naval facility, everything here is top rank.
