Description
Citrus at Social, one of Sunset Boulevard’s newest hot spots, has instantly become a magnet for hip celebrities, industry types and a cool mix of locals with its Social Thursdays, premiere parties and Grammy/Emmy events. But this isn’t the first time this landmark art deco location has been seeing stars.Originally built in 1924, by the same architect that designed the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater, the one-time Hollywood Athletic Club counted Cecil B. DeMille, Rudolph Valentino and Charlie Chaplin among its founding members. Johnny Weissmuller (of Tarzan fame) swam laps in its pool, Cornell Wilde taught fencing and Clark Gable used it as a hangout. Reputedly, platinum bombshell Jean Harlow once crashed the private men’s club, wearing nothing but a fur coat, in search of Errol Flynn who’d stood her up.
As time went on, the club never lost its “cool factor” and until recently was one of the best known nightclub pool halls around, attracting the likes of George Clooney, Keanu Reeves and Hillary Swank. Then, in 2006, restaurateur Jeffrey Chodorow lavished $15 million in renovations on this storied location for its metamorphosis into Citrus at Social.
The dramatic, black-tiled Lobby sets the stage for this elegant restaurant and club that still proudly displays its old Hollywood roots. To the right is the Valentino Room, with its spacious seating area and vintage carved bar and chandeliers. Behind the bar is a video wall that shows art installations and old black & white film footage. To the other side of the lobby is the very impressive main restaurant. The fabulous 1920s vaulted ceilings have been restored to expose their original fresco artwork, creating a wonderful sense of openness, while the curtained screens create an intimacy throughout the dining area.
Towards the back of the first floor, the original gymnasium has been turned into the Barrymore Ballroom. The beamed, wooden barrel ceiling has louvered skylights to allow natural light during the day, and arty red pleated lampshade chandeliers for night. The entire room is oval shaped with gleaming wooden floors and an overhead balcony that runs around the perimeter (the original jogging track) where you can set up your DJ.
While the first floor is open to the public, the exclusive second floor is reserved for A-list members and invitation-only guests of private functions. On the way upstairs, you pass two gilded mirrors adorned with 3-D characters depicting the founding members in their famous movie roles. At the top of the landing is a private bar alcove and three unique private reception sites. The Green Rooms encompass two separate areas: one with a huge round table that can seat up to 20 and is softly lit by hanging grape-cluster crystal chandeliers, and a similarly hued chamber room with a stone-and-mirror fireplace and private balcony. The Game Rooms have black woven wood walls, billiard tables, plasma screen TVs and can accommodate a DJ to create your own nightclub atmosphere. Finally, the Velvet Room, so named for its deep chocolate wall coverings, offers a lushly sensual environment for larger receptions.
