Description
The grandeur of a 1930s MGM musical is readily evoked at Cicada Restaurant and Lounge in the historic Oviatt Building. Built in 1928 as the home and business of fashionable clothier James Oviatt (who lived in the building’s penthouse), this 13-story Art Deco architectural jewel was once the tallest structure in downtown L.A. No expense was spared in the design—Oviatt commissioned much of the décor from fabled French jeweler Rene Lalique, who shipped more than 30 tons of his custom art glass from Paris through the Panama Canal for it.
From the street the building’s decorative façade is reminiscent of one of the grand theaters of yesteryear. Indeed, when you enter the foyer with its lavish Lalique ceiling and ornate elevator doors, you’ll feel as if the whole scene before you should be played in black and white, and that at any moment Jean Harlow might offer you a cigarette or that you might bump into dapper Ronald Coleman stepping out of the elevator. But the space might also look familiar to you from the many movies (like Pretty Woman and Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and television shows that have filmed scenes here in more recent years.
We were wowed by this place, so we expect that you will be, too. The restaurant itself is a spectacular two-story room, crowned by a 30-foot, hand-burnished, gold-leafed ceiling. An open mezzanine wraps around the perimeter, ending at an unusual dual walnut staircase opposite the entrance. Cicada can be used as a venue for either corporate or social events, but if you get married here, you may wish to stage a dramatic grand entrance to your reception on the staircase landing, with your guests gathered below. There is plenty to marvel at on the ground floor, whether it’s the rows of wooden merchandise drawers—former home to bow ties and cufflinks—that make up the bottom half of one wall, or the pairs of angels (an ode to this "city of angels") elaborately carved into the lofty wooden pillars. Display cases exhibit statues of Deco ladies in various enticing postures on one wall, and vintage champagne and liquor bottles on the other. The lighting throughout is subdued and golden, but effective in highlighting the restaurant’s elaborate architectural detailing.
The Mezzanine is an excellent vantage point from which to observe the action below, and tables with comfortable handmade wooden chairs are arranged all along the wide and spacious balcony. The bar and lounge are located on the Mezzanine, opposite the grand staircase. Guests can mingle here, sitting at the elegant bar or in a seating area furnished with plush sofas and chairs. To one side of the lounge there’s a black marble dance floor and a small stage with piano. For more intimate soirées, you can reserve just the upper floor or lounge, but for larger events, the entire restaurant is available.
Lest you think Cicada is stuck in the past, know that ever-trendy Hollywood has already hosted several major motion picture parties here, and the cuisine is the latest in Northern Italian culinary chic. The award-winning catering team and the on-site coordinator will help you stage your celebration, making sure that you and your guests are stars for the evening. We practically guarantee that everyone who attends will be singing your praises for weeks.
