Description
Chateau Tivoli is a rarity: a really spectacular Victorian home in mint condition where you can not only host a small event, but stay an entire weekend if you like to make the most of your San Francisco experience.
This stunning 22-room Victorian mansion can be your family’s gathering place for a shower, rehearsal dinner or intimate wedding. Nine separate rooms and suites make it possible for relatives to renew old ties or create new ones in an atmosphere of warmth, comfort and turn-of-the-century elegance. Whether they’re having tea in one of the suites, or sharing breakfast in the lovely dining room, they’ll feel deliciously spoiled by their home away from home.
Built by Oregon shipping magnate Daniel Jackson in 1892, Chateau Tivoli was a prominent San Francisco artistic and cultural center for almost a century. One of the mansion’s most notable residents was Ernestine Kreling, the owner of the famous Tivoli Opera House. She purchased the mansion after Jackson’s death, and resided here for 17 years. Over the next seven decades, the Victorian changed hands several times until 1985, when it underwent an extensive and historically accurate restoration to its original décor. Numerous coats of paint were stripped from the oak staircase, hardwood floors were replaced and refinished, plaster detailing was recreated, and a new slate roof with authentic iron "cresting" was installed. Named for its Chateau-esque Victorian style and its association with the old Tivoli opera house, the building was then opened as a bed and breakfast inn.
When you walk past the peacock mural at the entrance and through the grand portals, you enter a 19th-century world filled with hand-carved woodwork, crystal chandeliers, antiques, Oriental rugs, exquisite period wallpaper and stained glass. As you might imagine, the grand oak staircase is perfectly positioned for a dramatic bridal entrance. From the stairs, pass through the lobby into a double parlor for the ceremony, where a rounded bay window and fireplace create a congenial ambiance for exchanging vows. Afterwards the whole downstairs (parlors, lobby, and dining room) is available for a reception in Renaissance Revival splendor.
Upstairs, an assortment of lovely, individually decorated bedrooms can accommodate up to 25 guests. The Luisa Tetrazzini Suite, for example, has a cozy fireplace in its own parlor, an 18th-century canopied bed, bay windows, and a marble bathroom. Romantic enough for your own wedding night, it’s also sumptuous enough to house parents or in-laws.
Chateau Tivoli’s capable staff will happily cater special meals, or you may bring in your own favorite caterer. And even if you’re getting married or having your reception elsewhere, you can still bring close family members and friends together for a pre- or post-wedding brunch, lunch, or dinner in what many have called San Francisco’s most celebrated "painted lady."
