Description
"…Twenty-six miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is waitin’ for me…"
This once exclusive isle still beckons those in search of "fun in the sun" in a tranquil setting free of pollution, skyscrapers, and yes, cars (golf carts are the vehicle of choice here.) Make your event really special by inviting your guests to this island paradise, just over an hour from the mainland by express boat. The staff at the fabulous Catalina Visitors Country Club will gladly help you arrange affordable hotel packages that include convenient transportation—just one of the many amenities that make this the island’s premier venue.
The Club is open to the public, but it wasn’t always so. Avalon, the island’s only city, was originally developed by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley. In 1921 he built a Clubhouse in the hills above town for the annual spring training of his baseball team, the Chicago Cubs. Now, after a lavish renovation, the Clubhouse’s eclectic mix of Spanish Colonial design and sports nostalgia comfortably coexists with the elegant ambiance of an elite resort.
Poised on top of a knoll overlooking Avalon, the landmark Clubhouse is a striking representation of Early California Revival architecture, with distressed cream-colored walls, deep green trim, and a Spanish-tile roof. Brick steps take you up to a landing with a spectacular vista of the quaint village below and the vast sea beyond. Continue up the stairs through an arched portico to the Club’s main Courtyard, a lovely spot for both ceremonies and receptions. The front is framed by classical columns and arched breezeways, reminiscent of Spanish castles. Tie the knot at the far end of the Courtyard, where a short flight of steps leading up to the Pro Shop provides a natural stage. Follow the exchange of vows with a champagne toast in the middle of the Fountain Terrace, near an elaborate fountain of "island blue" tile that is a feast for the eyes. Lush foliage, the lilting melody of songbirds, and refreshing island breezes stir the senses…it’s easy to see why al fresco receptions here are so popular. Guests lounge beneath market umbrellas in cushioned wrought-iron chairs, rousing themselves after dinner to dance under the stars.
Equally memorable affairs are held in the chic, Mission-style Dining Room. Large arched windows open to hillside and oceanside verandas; wrought-iron chandeliers imported from South America hang from the wood-beamed ceiling; a series of archways bisect the room, adding depth and interest. Like the other spaces at the Club, the Dining Room is done with taste and attention to detail, from the plein air paintings of Catalina gracing the walls and the rich mahogany doors and trim to the plush upholstered chairs and grand fireplace.
Today, more than a century after it opened, the Clubhouse and golf course still attract golf enthusiasts and visitors from around the world. You, too, will probably fall under the island’s spell, so when your party’s over, don’t forget to toss a lucky penny into the fountain before you leave and make a wish to return to paradise very soon!
