Description
A beloved Monterey landmark has recently gotten a fresh look, along with a bevy of upgrades that enhance its appeal as an easy, homey, and affordable destination event venue. Constructed in 1824, the original Casa Munras was the hacienda of Don Esteban Munras, the last Spanish diplomat to California. The renovation preserves the Casa’s Early California flavor, while adding modern conveniences—a sleek business center, a fitness center, and a brand new spa (opening in summer 2007) to ensure brides are relaxed and glowing for their photo ops.
Though large enough to accommodate your guests overnight—there are 166 guestrooms—45 with cozy fireplaces—Casa Munras has the congenial ambiance of a family-run inn. Personal service is a hallmark, the atmosphere is casual and friendly, and there are lots of thoughtful touches to make visitors feel welcome. Complimentary amenities include hi-speed wireless internet in each guestroom, a nutritious Healthy Start breakfast buffet, lemonade and cookies served in the lobby, and plenty of free parking—almost unheard of these days!
The hotel’s 11 two-story buildings are spread out over the property, connected by red brick paths that meander past flowering shrubs, lofty pine and palms, and vibrant fuchsia. The whitewashed brick façades of the cottage-like buildings are laced with lipstick-pink bougainvillea. Colorful hanging flower baskets are sweet surprises in many of the first-floor colonnades.
The crowning glory of Casa Munras is its central garden, which flourishes around a swimming pool and patio. A medley of rose bushes is especially enticing in spring, when the unfurling blossoms cast their perfume on the breeze. Just outside the pool patio’s gate, willow, maple and oak trees provide dappled shade for a triangle of lawn. Here, graceful tree boughs frame the bridal couple against a backdrop of roses and the shimmering aqua pool. On a pleasant afternoon, serve cocktails poolside and savor the garden view. Or host your social hour in the Casa Munras Bar & Lounge, which has French doors that open to a landscaped outdoor patio facing the garden.
One of our favorite reception options is the Adobe, a light and bright room that evokes the warmth of an old-fashioned dining room. At one end, an antique bay window trimmed with decorative moldings is a pretty spot to showcase the wedding cake or a sweetheart table. The Adobe also features an indoor patio, which is an adorable enclave for brunches, showers, or rehearsal dinners.
A more formal reception setting is the 2,200-square-foot Norman Ballroom and its adjoining Library, a cozy bricked annex with a fireplace and vaulted open-beamed ceiling for a Craftsman-like flair.
After everyone retires for the evening, they’ll experience one more treat: the FeatherBorne bed, an oasis of comfort that will keep newlyweds cozily ensconced long after everyone else has risen and shined.
A short walk from downtown Monterey, Fisherman’s Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, this gem of a hotel is well suited for out-of-town guestsor for a pair of lovebirds spending a mini-honeymoon on the fabulous Central Coast.

Fees & Deposits
50% of the estimated event total is required to reserve your date. The balance is due 10 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $500–2,000 depending on the space rented. Meals range $35.95–75.95/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
