Description
If you like pleasant surprises, take a look at California Cafe Los Gatos. It’s one of those places where the simple exterior makes you think you’re in for a tame experience, but what you get when you cross the threshold is a visual and gustatory joyride.
From the front door, a red and purple slate walkway angles back into the Main Dining Room. You immediately notice the purple wall on your right, separating you from the Lounge and Bar areas, as well as the impressive wine display. Everywhere your gaze falls, there are exciting colors and textures: round columns made from striped African tiger wood; banquettes and booths covered in gold-and-purple fabric, woven in striped or geometric patterns; undulating railings made from blackened steel and copper; a black granite bar; and a cream-colored ceiling with orange, red and green soffits. In the rear of the room, tables are set in a yellow ocher arcade, facing a brick-red wall of windows overlooking the Los Gatos hills. Now, before you start thinking that this rainbow of hues may verge on the garish, let us assure you that it doesn’t: the colors have been muted to appear rich and vivid, but never too bright; the overall effect is not just inviting—it’s scintillating.
For a very small get-together, you can take over one of the seating areas in the Main Dining Room. But most events are held in the adjacent Monte Bello and Mount Eden Rooms. Set side by side, they can be reserved individually or together. Both have textured plaster walls, a deep-green ceiling, and olive carpeting sprinkled with purple and red accents. Sheer curtains filter the afternoon sunlight as it flows in through tall arched windows. A double-sided fireplace enclosed in a floor-to-ceiling orange "box" marks the center point between the two rooms; the open space on either side of the fireplace can be closed off by bifold doors on one side and bifold windows on the other.
The Monte Bello Room is dominated by a striking 27-foot abstract mural in vibrant shades of green, terra cotta, yellow and red. Wedge-shaped sections of mirror are scattered over the rear wall like pieces of pie, reflecting a kaleidoscopic view of the trees and adjacent patio through the front windows. The slightly smaller Mount Eden Room also overlooks the wood-and-brick patio, which is shaded by oaks and bordered by large terra cotta pots brimming with flowers. Serve cocktails outdoors and dinner inside, or set tables in both areas for an indoor/outdoor dining experience.
The California Cafe is in demand for weddings, receptions, meetings (some companies stay all day!) and lots of private parties. And it’s not just the dazzling décor that wins people over. As luck would have it, what the Cafe offers your taste buds may be even more intriguing than what it offers your eyes. The Bay Area-trained chef’s culinary vision fuses classic techniques, seasonal California ingredients and contemporary presentation. Oenophiles will also rejoice in the restaurant’s outstanding wine list. You don’t have to travel the globe to enjoy world-class cuisine—it’s right here in your own backyard.
