Calamigos Ranch

Description

Although Calamigos bills itself as a country ranch, set amongst 120 acres of rolling hills, grassy meadows, lakes and ancient oaks, most of the event facilities are far from rustic.

Ceremonies take place outdoors in one of five sites. The Garden Patio, located near the ranch’s entrance, is a long rectangular lawn with waterfalls at each end. Guests are seated on either side of a stone aisle, facing a redwood arbor bedecked with flowers, where the bride and groom exchange vows. Enclosed by a low white brick wall, and partially shaded by surrounding trees, it’s a peaceful and private spot.

The Oaks Deck is popular for intimate ceremonies. Rows of chairs are set up in front of a wood arbor with a rock waterfall directly behind it, and a backdrop of eucalyptus, pine and oak trees. A third option is the Cottage Lawn, a secluded little meadow ringed by trees. Couples tie the knot on a small earthen terrace beneath a beautiful spreading oak, or in front of a clear pond at the base of a river rock waterfall. Couples have access to the cottage at the edge of the lawn, which is used as a dressing area and can also be reserved for an overnight stay. A fourth site is the open area under the 100-year-old oak trees near the Barn.

We were pleasantly surprised by the ranch’s reception facilities. The Main Dining Room is a delightful, sun-filled space, with "walls" of French doors that open to admit air as well as light. The high, sloping ceiling consists primarily of skylights, screened over to soften the sun’s rays. Needless to say, the Boston ferns hanging above and the ficus trees placed throughout are thriving in their greenhouse home. One remarkable feature is the automatic sun shower, a boon to diners, especially on hot days. When it’s turned on, an exterior pipe that runs the length of the room releases a curtain of water outside in the form of a light rain. The shower not only provides a glistening spectacle just beyond the French doors, it creates a fine, cooling mist that wafts into the room.

Couples who get married on the Oaks Deck usually have their reception in the dining room itself. Like the Main Dining Room, it uses French doors to maximize light and views of the outdoors. Crisp white table linens contrast nicely with the warm pine ceiling beams and door frames, and once again, ferns and ficus trees provide indoor greenery. Buffets are often set up on the redwood deck, which is partially shaded by overhanging oak branches. The Cottage Lawn is large enough to host a ceremony and, after the vows, guests can walk the short distance to the reception in the Pavilion Room. And if you’ve come to the ranch for one of their legendary western-style celebrations (including Barn Mitzvahs!), check out The Barn. It’s the real thing: the floor is covered with sawdust, bales of hay are scattered about, and it’s painted—you guessed it—bright red.

The atmosphere at the ranch is unique and tranquil, and the Calamigos staff are professionals when it comes to helping you plan your wedding. They’ll design your event to suit your special needs, and coordinate everything down to the last detail.
