Description
Romance, nostalgia and the spirit of Early California are entwined in the rich heritage of San Juan Capistrano, the picturesque village where Padre Junipero Serra planted Orange County’s earliest roots. Here, brides can step back to a less hurried era at Café Mozart, an ivy-covered gem just blocks from the "Jewel of the Missions" and the train depot where wedding guests might arrive by rail in the centuries-old community.
Strolling down Camino Capistrano, they’ll soon come to the twin adobe archways of Mercado Village, in the heart of the city’s historic downtown. Tucked behind these porticos is the Spanish-style courtyard of Hans Lschl’s and Carla Ramos’ gracious café. Trimmed with lights and lined with languid eucalyptus, blooming oleander trees and a brightly tiled giant mural, the jasmine-scented quad is an enchanting spot for an evening wedding ceremony. To add to the ambiance, some brides opt to float candles or drape greenery in the gurgling tri-tier fountain at its center.
As they await the bride’s arrival in the courtyard, seated guests gaze up at one of the features that makes Café Mozart so special: the Wedding Chapel in the Sky, where many couples tie the knot. Adorned with snowy hydrangeas and lilac trumpet flowers, this "church" is really a covered balcony poised twenty feet above the crowd, and set off with drapes, theatrical lighting, an antique bell and a dazzling stained-glass hanging. After making their entrance in the courtyard, a bride and her groom ascend to the outdoor chapel via a dramatic stairway. To accommodate friends and family members unable to attend, the chapel is equipped with a live web cam, which enables them to watch the ceremony unfold online.
Once they’ve exchanged vows, couples have photographs taken in the courtyard, or retreat to numerous more secluded patios on the property—all with Mayan-style fountains. While most sit-down or buffet receptions are held in the courtyard, seated meals can also be served inside the homey, Old World-style restaurant.
For small gatherings, Café Mozart’s private dining room has the relaxed charm of a European inn. An eclectic mix of antique furnishings and a baby grand piano contribute to the feeling that you’re celebrating in a friend’s living room. The dining room looks out on the courtyard, where there’s plenty of space for a dance floor and DJ setup. Larger groups can combine restaurant and courtyard seating.
The European flavor of the Café carries over into its cuisine, which is decidedly Continental. Vienna-trained chef Hans Lschl, a former chef at the Westin St. Francis, prepares all dishes fresh and on-site, while his wife, Carla, crafts exquisite custom wedding cakes.
Although Café Mozart is named for Austria’s most famous native son, it’s a magical setting that truly reflects Orange County’s past.
