Cafe Del Rey

Description

You won’t find any artwork on the walls at Cafe del Rey, but you won’t miss it. With an extraordinary 5,000-bottle wine collection visible as you enter, front-row marina views and beautifully presented cuisine, you’ll have plenty to look at.

But visual appeal is not the only way this restaurant impresses—they also win you over with taste. Cafe del Rey is known for its inventive modern fusion menu, particularly its super-fresh seafood dishes that pair French technique with Pacific Rim influences. And dessert is no mere afterthought here, either. The resident French-trained pastry chef is utterly passionate about what he does, and yes, he does wedding cakes—magnificently.

Exposed beams and ducts plus an exhibition kitchen give Cafe del Rey a contemporary sensibility, but the overall feeling inside isn’t just cool modernism. Decorated in shades of sage, aubergine and flax, with an occasional touch of saffron, the interior is warm and tasteful. The Lounge, which opens to the Main Dining Room, is made even more inviting by a fireplace and baby grand piano. Settle into one of the restaurant’s comfy banquettes or pick a window-side seat and enjoy the view through a wall of mahogany-framed windows: palms swaying in the breeze and a marina full of bobbing sailboats. In the evening, with a fire in the fireplace, candles flickering and handsome orange glasses atop the tables, this place just glows.

It’s possible to buy out the Main Dining Room for an event, but Cafe del Rey specializes in small private functions, which are held in the adjacent Regatta Room. This space couldn’t be more perfect for an intimate wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, brunch or shower. With its three walls of windows, exposed framework, potted palms, and peaked canvas roof, it’s reminiscent of a greenhouse. A beautiful wood-framed, brushed-metal fireplace anchors one end, and a radiant-heated floor keeps the room cozy year-round. The effect is laid-back and understated, with an upmarket edge. We love the tea-party option here, featuring finger sandwiches, pastries, and tea served in cast-iron Japanese tetsubin teapots.

If you adore Cafe del Rey’s food, but you’re having your celebration somewhere else, no problem. The restaurant not only caters, but also offers total event coordination, so you can bring their charmingly sophisticated style off-site.

With its creative, award-winning cuisine and waterfront location, Cafe del Rey makes you remember why you love living in—and dining out in—Southern California.
