Why We Like This Place

Brix may sit right on Napa Valley’s main highway, but once you’re inside you’re in some sort of Wine Country Dreamtime, where nothing matters but good food, good wine and the sharing of both with family and friends. (By the way, "Brix" is a term used by wine growers that refers to the percentage of sugar in ripening grapes.)

Brix is surrounded by vineyards, but behind the restaurant is a huge kitchen garden, formally laid out in the European style. Many of the fruits, vegetables and herbs used in Brix’s cuisine are grown here—you frequently see a white-garbed sous-chef in the garden, gathering ingredients for an order. Here, too, you can hold an informal ceremony amid the flowers and fruit, with a vista of the vineyards stretching out across the valley to the foot of the western mountains.

Intimate receptions often take place in the Reserve Room, which succeeds in being both elegant and informal: a polished wood wine library covers one wall; glass-and-wrought-iron chandeliers are suspended overhead; and an inviting covered terrace beckons guests outside to sit under a canopy of vines and hanging pots of flowers.

The largest reception site is the Restaurant Terrace, an open, breezy area with more hanging pots of flowers, a wisteria arbor and low limestone walls. From here the view begins at the adjacent wide green lawn, takes in the kitchen gardens, extends to the vineyards, and finally reaches the mountains.

Smaller events find a cozy nest in the (literally!) rose-covered Cottage, which has its own private patio. Inside, pale wainscoting rises up to meet warm ochre walls, with glass sconces providing soft illumination. The western wall, which is almost all glass, overlooks the covered patio with its garden view. As your gaze rests on the long dining table, it’s easy to visualize the toasts, the laughter, and the easy conviviality of an intimate reception or rehearsal dinner in this cheerful room.

In addition to growing a significant percentage of the produce used in the restaurant, Brix bakes its own bread and smokes its own salmon. Other ingredients are procured in season, and as fresh as possible. The wine list is graced by some of Napa’s most prestigious vintages—in 2004 it won the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence and the International Restaurant & Hospitality Diamond Award. (Really, if their wine list were a movie, it would star Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts and 52 others of the same star caliber.)

EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The Flower Garden Dining Area holds up to 150 guests. Indoors, the Oakville Room holds up to 60 guests, the Cottage holds up to 30 and the Reserve Cellar up to 12 guests.

MEETING CAPACITY: The Oakville Room holds up to 80 guests seated conference-style.

Fees & Deposits

A $50/person deposit is required to reserve your date. 50% of site fees due at booking, the balance is due at the close of your event. Meals range $38–68/person. Tax, alcohol, and a 20% service charge are additional.
