Why We Like This Place
Just an hour from San Francisco and twenty minutes from Sacramento lies an exquisite organic farm and winery. Surrounded by peach and apricot orchards, lavender fields, grapevines and seasonal row crops, Bear Flag Farm looks as if it was plucked straight from the French countryside. The winery, main house, guest cottage and barn are like a tiny village, with orange tile roofs and golden stucco walls that seem to glow in the sunlight.
As guests arrive, they drive onto the farm past a wrought-iron gate that opens onto a winding driveway divided by a row of flowering crepe myrtles. At the end of the drive, their cars are whisked away by a valet to a parking area hidden from view.
The bridal party has its own changing rooms in the guest cottage, which also includes a room equipped with salon chairs for hair and make-up preparation.
By now, the couple has already decided which of the farm’s wonderful ceremony and reception sites are best suited for their special day. Some brides like to glide through the French doors of the cottage onto a small terrace, and then walk down the steps to exchange vows on the soft lawn below. Or, the couple might say “I do” on the 3,000-square-foot lavender lawn, nestled in the lavender field. Yet another option is a ceremony next to the vineyard, where guests are seated after being treated to fresh lemonade or minty iced-tea and a stroll through the almond orchard.
Formal dinners, buffets, champagne receptions, cake-cutting ceremonies and dancing can be staged on the grand terrace, in the grassy amphitheater guarded by sycamore trees, or under a sprawling tent shading the vineyard lawn. Parasols are available for daytime events, and as the sun sets, silk lanterns or even chandeliers can be used to cast a romantic glow over the evening’s festivities.
Bear Flag Farm provides a tremendous amount of flexibility for its guests. Since only one daylong event is allowed per weekend, couples have the time and space to fully prepare for their celebration. The preferred list of caterers includes some of the best Bay Area and Sacramento chefs, and early in the year Bear Flag Farm works with each chef to select specific crops that will be harvested fresh from the farm for seasonal menus. In this way, Bear Flag Farm’s goal of providing a true field-to-table experience is fulfilled, and guests reap the rewards of flavors only available to those who come to the farm. Live music is not only allowed, but encouraged—the one restriction being that is has to end at a reasonable hour out of consideration for neighboring farmers.
In addition to weddings, Bear Flag Farm hosts other events such as private and corporate parties, and a farm dinner series that features Northern California’s most extraordinary chefs and winemakers. Part of Bear Flag Farm’s mission is to expand peoples’ awareness of organic and sustainable farming. That shouldn’t be hard—its benefits and delights are easy for anyone to appreciate as they linger amid this abundance of fruit trees, grapevines and rows of lavender.
