Why We Like This Place
The Beach Chalet occupies the enviable spot where two of San Francisco’s most treasured natural wonders—Golden Gate Park and the Pacific—converge. Built in 1925, this Spanish Colonial-style building has served as a respite for many a visitor to both park and beach. Today, guests of the historic structure will find some elements of its past—like murals and mosaics in the ground level foyer—but the building has been mostly remade into two exciting restaurants that are available for special events.
Though the entire property is known to San Franciscans as the Beach Chalet, this venue is divided into two distinct restaurants: the Beach Chalet upstairs and the Park Chalet downstairs. If you’re partial to panoramic ocean views through floor-to-ceiling windows, reserve the upper facility. The sight of rolling waves is always relaxing, and the warm earth-toned walls and abundant wood accents add to the inviting ambiance. Locals often come here to dine, or enjoy one of the establishment’s well-known handcrafted ales at the cozy bar. However, during wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners and other special events, the mood changes from casual to romantic: tables are arranged into long banquet seating with special linens and flickering oil lamps. A jazz trio, band or DJ often sets up in one corner, while the bar area becomes a spacious dance floor.
Downstairs toward the rear of the building is the Park Chalet. It’s a gorgeous eatery and bar that opens onto the far west edge of Golden Gate Park. Retractable glass doors run the length of three walls and showcase the abundance of grass, trees and flowerbeds just outside. Inside, tall potted plants dot the large dining room, where a concrete floor, metal accents and central fireplace lend the space a hip, designer quality. Feel free to use the room in the way that best suits your vision; some couples have an intimate ceremony in front of the roaring fireplace, then dine at long banquet tables or more dramatic square tables, topped in black or white linens and set off by glowing candles. If your budget allows, the Park Chalet will gladly help you arrange tenting for the back and side lawns, where ceremonies, champagne receptions, dancing and dessert take place amidst the park’s flora. Some brides and grooms have even wed at other sites in the park—the Shakespeare Garden or the Windmill and Tulip Gardens, for example—and then adjourned to the Park Chalet for their reception.
Both of these restaurants excel at providing a festive atmosphere, which includes their delectable cuisine. Their chefs will customize a menu for your event, tailoring it to your taste. They’ll also help you select the right wines to complement your meal, and the unique beer they serve happens to be made on the premises.
Like most of San Francisco’s historic structures, the Beach Chalet building has gone through its share of metamorphoses over the years. From sandy beach refuge of yore to the stylish special event location of today, it’s seen thousands of people come and go. The exhilarating ocean air and fragrant smell of eucalyptus—not to mention the charming restaurants themselves—will keep folks returning to this spot by the sea well into the future.
