Description

Hospitality? You don’t know what hospitality is until you’ve visited the Bayleaf Restaurant in Napa. The warmth and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant, and the sheer generosity of owners Mounir Fahmy and Bob Kahan, must be experienced to be believed.

Fahmy calls the Bayleaf his "gingerbread cottage." With its low, peaked roofline, multipaned windows and surrounding English country garden, the Bayleaf does resemble a house straight out of a fairy tale. But the illusion of make-believe ends there: inside the restaurant, Mounir, his friendly staff, and their luscious California/Continental cuisine are all deliciously real.

Although the Bayleaf is sheltered by a stand of redwoods, its sunny garden is bright with roses and a rainbow of other flowers. The front lawn provides an inviting space for a small ceremony: two fountains contribute the sound of falling water, while the couple exchanges vows in front of a frieze of flowers and a pretty view of the "cottage." (Mounir says that God created this beauty, and the grounds certainly make a heavenly backdrop for wedding photos.)

Bayleaf’s layout is a rambling series of rooms and patios, each one with its own character. Floors are tiled with Egyptian travertine or with a bay leaf-pattern carpet in the restaurant’s burgundy and celadon colors. Panels of backlit translucent alabaster set into the long bar and onyx elsewhere in the restaurant glow softly, creating a romantic creamy-amber light. The overall effect throughout is eclectic and interesting, combining antique touches like old brick fireplaces with ultra modern accents such as Murano glass light fixtures.

Any of the rooms and patios—or the entire restaurant—may be reserved for your event. The Trellis Patio, which can be covered, is great for dancing or dining. Three little fountains tinkle merrily away, and a gigantic stone fireplace provides warmth. The Italian Room, which opens onto the garden and a rustic fountain, is perfect for rehearsal dinners, while the larger French Room, with its stone walls, brick fireplace and alabaster-and-wrought-iron chandeliers, lends Provincial charm to a reception.

The expansive patio behind the restaurant, set under ancient redwoods and oaks, has a little gazebo for an intimate ceremony. At night, lights strung overhead turn this outdoor setting into a glowing Impressionist painting. Live music can be set up almost anywhere on the patio, and there’s an excellent sound system.

The Bayleaf’s cuisine relies on fresh ingredients, and they don’t get much fresher than those used here. A huge kitchen garden at the rear of the restaurant is planted with a vast array of vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and herbs. Some couples like to pose for wedding photos in the center of this garden, amid a cloud of purple cosmos; a vineyard stretches out behind them all the way to the east Napa hills.

Mounir explains that in his native Egypt, everyone in a community must give a gift to a bridal couple. His gift to the newlyweds is an overnight stay in the Bridal Suite, an elegant little cottage on the restaurant grounds. This hideaway feels spacious, thanks to cathedral ceilings and skylights, and its attractive décor is the handiwork of Bob’s wife Jane Kahan. Nothing has been spared to make the cottage both comfortable and luxurious, from the full kitchen and the little gas fireplace that brightens both living room and bedroom, to the Hermés soap and lotion in the bathroom. When the festivities have ended, the bride and groom can slip off to their own private retreat just a few steps away. Now that is hospitality.
