Why We Like This Place
Admit it. You love classic cars. The curves…the chrome…the history. If you could just sit in say, a 1930 Ford Model A, you’d be in heaven. Well, heaven is closer than you think. Minutes away from the bustle of LAX, the Automobile Driving Museum is home to one of the coolest collections of vintage vehicles on the West Coast. Its new 28,000-square-foot facility also provides several indoor and outdoor venues for a variety of custom-designed events. This is not your typical museum—here you can look and touch. On Sundays rides are offered in select cars, and for special events you can make a spectacular entrance in one of these perfectly restored beauties. Still waiting for your fifteen minutes of fame? Grab your photographer and pretend you’re a celebrity in one of the more notable cars, like the 1936 Packard that belonged to Stalin or the 1932 Plymouth Towncar used by Eleanor Roosevelt.
The museum’s collection is on view in the Display Area, a large “parking garage” that’s accessible to your guests throughout your event. If you can turn your attention away from the cars, take a moment to check out the long wall whimsically painted with a storefront street scene from the 1930s.
Each of the museum’s events spaces has its own distinctive ambiance. The Art Nouveau-inspired Lairport Automobile Showroom recalls the grandeur of a 1930s ballroom, where fashionable people dressed to the nines and danced the Fox Trot. The interior balcony, with its ornate wrought-iron railing, is a theatrical spot to kick off a swanky wedding. Vamp for the cameras as you make your way down the steps into an elegantly decorated room, softly lit by magnificent 1920s brass chandeliers created by famed metalwork artist Oscar Bruno Bach.
For a more relaxed setting, the Party Room is a loft-like space with brick walls and an exposed ceiling. All sorts of events are held here, from birthday and anniversary parties to corporate bashes and class reunions. The room is truly a blank slate, so you can decorate it however you like. One group hosted a 1950s-themed event, complete with checkered tablecloths and waiters on roller skates.
The 1950s look is permanent in the V8 Grill, a carhop diner with an old time soda fountain outfitted with period white formica-topped tables and chrome, vinyl-upholstered chairs. Sure to make you nostalgic for poodle skirts and leather motorcycle jackets, it’s a fun option for entertaining up to 25 of your best friends.
Large events, such as car shows, car club meetings and corporate barbecues, can spread out on the expansive paved and landscaped area behind the museum, which can also be tented.
If you ever wanted to do something completely different, throw a party at The Automobile Driving Museum. The classic cars are gorgeous, the staff’s passion for them is infectious, and the whole place is bound to put you in a decidedly happy state of mind.
