Description
In 1849, George Patterson left the Midwest for California’s gold fields. He tried mining for a year, but failed miserably. So, broke and sick, he decided to turn to something he knew how to do well: farming. By 1877, he had transformed himself into one of the wealthiest and most respected men in the area, and was able to acquire 6,000 acres of prime land. At last he had struck gold—not in the mines, but in the fertile plains of the East Bay.
Today, his home is still a working farm. Named after a forest described in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Ardenwood is a place where you travel back in time—draft horses still pull wagons, ladies wear Victorian dresses and the land still grows the kinds of crops it did 100 years ago. Guests can stroll through the beautiful gardens that surround the Patterson Mansion, the impressive focal point of Ardenwood. An expansive lawn, complete with a white Victorian-style gazebo, provides a wonderful area for weddings and receptions. Evening receptions are especially magical, with old-fashioned oil lanterns glowing on each table. If you like, you can arrange a special tour of the house, which has been restored to its 19th-century elegance, or treat your guests to a trip around the property in a gleaming Victorian horse-drawn carriage.
Lovely as it is for weddings, Ardenwood is just as wonderful for picnics. Reserve one of the Deer Park Picnic Areas for your company party or family reunion, and you’ll have exclusive use of it for the day. Your guests will not be bored: the impressive list of activities here includes softball, volleyball, horseshoes, ping pong and face painting. You can add a hosted game package or even rent a dunk tank. Kids have their own fun in the form of a bounce house and carnival games. The farm offers other special features, too, such as country kitchen demonstrations, antique farm displays and a blacksmith shop.
Ardenwood is open to the public during the day, so while your actual event site is private, you may see public visitors strolling about outside your area. Note that to maintain the farm’s authentic character, vehicles and music are restricted. These efforts to preserve a turn-of-the-century environment are worth it: the setting envelops you in the peace and quiet of the country, and modern civilization seems a million miles away.
