Why We Like This Place
Residing at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains is the serenely beautiful Altadena Town and Country Club. It’s hard to believe that this gorgeous estate—encompassing several verdant acres of tennis courts, gardens and a swimming pool—began as a simple, Craftsman-style bungalow. Built in 1910, the Altadena Country Club (as it was known then) weathered a stormy adolescence; floods, Santa Anas and the Great Depression nearly caused its ruin at several points along the way.
Fortunately, in 1946 community pride and ingenuity ended the Club’s run of bad luck. Rechristened the Altadena Town & Country Club, the facility matured into what it is today: a gracious, gabled multilevel structure that serves as a very stylish place to hold a celebration.
A handsome porte-cochère directs you through the Club’s front doors and into the Foyer. Here, it’s easy to imagine guests sinking into the cozy armchairs and musing to the melodies of Cole Porter issuing from the black baby grand. Double doors on either side of the Foyer swing open to the Club’s ballrooms—the Mendocino and Victorian Rooms. Depending on your party’s size, you can reserve these spaces either separately or in tandem. The Mendocino Room features a Craftsman-style wood-paneled ceiling and enormous windows that provide ample light as well as views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the Club’s expansive grounds. More sophisticated is the Victorian Room, distinguished by its blonde hardwood floors, ornamental fireplace and charming bay window. Parties may also spill out from the Victorian Room onto the Club’s lovely covered veranda.
Right below the veranda is the South Lawn. Enclosed by tall trees, and bordered by stone benches, flower beds and an arbor, it’s a private enclave that works well for a ceremony. Guests can mingle on the grass, enjoying views of the golf course as well as the garden setting. If you choose to get married here, it’s just a few steps to the adjacent Victorian Room for your reception.
Couples also marry on the Wedding Court, a pristine patio shaded by a towering pine and surrounded by lawn, roses and crisp green hedges. A stairway descending from the Club’s upper level showcases the bride’s entrance, while a trellis at the court’s south end serves as an exquisite frame for the exchange of vows. One more reception area is also available here: the Terrace Room with a spacious balcony that shows off a panoramic view of the club grounds. Sporting green canvas umbrellas and an abundance of bright blooming terracotta pots, the Terrace’s refreshing open-air atmosphere makes it a popular event spot.
The Altadena Town and Country Club has also been a favorite site for a number of film shoots. Wonder Years, Speechless, Dirty Dancing and Starsky & Hutch have all taken advantage of this classy backdrop. Why not follow their cue and reserve the Club for your own production?
