Alexander Valley Gardens

Description

You’re trundling along Route 128, which has to be one of the sweetest two-lane country roads in California, when the highway suddenly makes a 90-degree turn. Right at the top of the curve is a charming turn-of-the-century house bordered by gardens. You think to yourself, "What would it be like to get married there?"

Great question. The answer is that getting married here is like having your wedding in your backyard—only this backyard is an explosion of flowers and herbs surrounded by thousands of acres of vineyards in the heart of the Alexander Valley wine country.

The estate’s event site is simple perfection: two lawns, one terraced above the other, amidst lush gardens full of roses, hydrangeas, agapanthus, daisies, lilies, poppies, lavender, carnations, geraniums, fruit trees and redwoods. The expansive upper lawn, adjacent to the swimming pool, is the favorite area for dining and dancing. The lower lawn, reached by descending several wide stone steps, is planted with a delicate variety of grass, making it the preferred spot for ceremonies. However, since each bride has her own way of choreographing her wedding, you’re welcome to use the lawns any way you like to achieve the flow you desire.

Bridal processions usually enter through the vegetable garden at the lower lawn, and as guests walk to their seats they drink in the feeling of being out in the country: the view of nearby vines extends to the towering hills and ridges in the distance; birds lazily loop and wheel overhead; and all around there is such a profusion of color, from the vibrant flowers and every variation of green, to the gold of the sunlight and hills, to the sky’s intense blue.

When you hold your wedding at Alexander Valley Gardens, you can take over the whole backyard, which includes a children’s play area, complete with swings and a climbing structure. A tree house on other side of the house is available, too. At night, strings of decorative lights threaded through the redwood branches add a festive sparkle.

The catering company that handles weddings at the estate is one of the region’s best, with years of experience. They’ll help you plan your celebration, and then efficiently take care of all details, from valet parking and renting the house (which isn’t otherwise a part of wedding packages here) to the reception. And because only one event is scheduled per weekend, you’ll have all the lawns, trees, flowers, winding pathways, ponds, and gorgeous vistas entirely to yourself.
