Albany Community Center

Description

“A small town in a big city” could best describe Albany, tucked as it is between Richmond, El Cerrito and Berkeley. Although it has all the conveniences of a modern metropolis, it’s still a throwback to a more sociable time: brightly painted wood frame store fronts on Solano Avenue are right out of an old-fashioned “Main Street,” and delightful shops and sidewalk cafes inspire a leisurely pace. Many of Albany’s homes have broad front porches that are garlanded with climbing rose bushes and shaded by oak trees, inviting you to extend your stroll through pretty neighborhoods. And while you’re at it, stop in at the Albany Community Center, an appealing gathering place that embodies the same congenial spirit as the rest of the town.

You’ll recognize the snappy Community Center by its Observation Tower, rising above the contemporary complex and surrounding trees. Hedgerows and leafy saplings form a fringe of greenery along the front of the Center, whose entrance leads into a spacious foyer called the Terrazzo. The Center was designed to house the town library on one side and the recreation center on the other, and the cheerful Terrazzo links the two. Bathed in natural light from a lofty skylight, it provides a warm welcome for you and your guests. The Terrazzo also doubles as an art gallery, and a few comfortable chairs make it possible to sit down, relax and admire the paintings and photographic exhibits featuring prominent Northern California artists.

When you’re ready to attend your special event, turn into a smaller lobby that adjoins the Terrazzo and the Community Room. It serves as your prefunction area, where friends and family mingle and sign the guest book before moving on into the Community Room.

This versatile banquet area can set the stage for almost any kind of celebration. Sunshine or moonlight filters through a vaulted pyramid of glass that crowns the room, contributing to an open, expansive quality. Features like highly polished oak floors, wood trim and demi-panels of matching oak lend the simple space distinction, while providing a neutral palette for your own decorating scheme. A long row of French doors along one side of the room leads outdoors to the patio.

Out here guests can enjoy their cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, while watching the sparrows flit among the trees and shrubbery. Enhance the festive atmosphere by hanging twinkle lights or other decorations from a narrow Asian-style pergola that defines the outer edge of the patio.

You can bring your own caterer, and there’s a full modern kitchen to help them serve up an impressive feast. The facility is not only audiovisually complete, but also has a friendly staff that’s on duty during your event. Albany Community Center is very reasonably priced, making it very in demand. So don’t wait too long to book here, or you may miss out on this popular venue.
