A Here Comes The Guide Wedding Venue ReviewRead More Show Less
The University Club Atop Symphony Towers is the highest viewpoint in San Diego as well as one of its most exclusive urban retreats, and they're happy to extend their VIP treatment to nonmembers hosting a wedding or special event here.
This super-chic, downtown penthouse exudes understated elegance, not to mention jaw-dropping, panoramic views of the entire city. Many of San Diego's elite business and cultural luminaries are among its members, but toss out any preconceived ideas you might have of stuffy rooms and a stodgy atmosphere: the 34th-floor club is modern and stunning, with golden hour sunsets drenching the space as the city lights sparkle just beyond.
The elevator whisks you to the stylish entry where a receptionist greets you. Straight ahead is the inviting bar and lounge, highlighted by dark ceramic floors and a striking color palette of crisp white and black punctuated by vibrant splashes of color on high-backed sofas and contemporary club chairs. Huge floor-to-ceiling picture windows frame spectacular vistas that showcase the San Diego Bay, Pacific Ocean, Coronado Islands, and downtown skyline. An adjacent lounge offers a private retreat, where guests can enjoy a quiet respite with a bird's-eye view of the city (perhaps even the Padres in action down at Petco Park!).
Speaking of action, to your left is the Media Room, featuring a 103″ flat screen TV and an array of signed baseball bats hanging in Lucite boxes, which have been donated by an owner of the hometown team. Glittering chrome chandeliers spiral from the ceiling like tiered sculptures and art is everywhere, from classic oils to a changing display of local artist pieces that you pass en route to the Laureate Ballroom.
This grand space is the hub for your private event. It features ocean-inspired carpet and sleek banquet chairs as part of the recent remodel, and the rich, muted colors of the room make the sensational views of lush Balboa Park through walls of glass even more dramatic. Wooden doors with frosted-glass panels allow you to divide the ballroom and have your ceremony on one side and your reception on the other. On Sundays, you have the option of using the entire club, so you might want to start by exchanging vows in the Founder's Room—which overlooks the Coronado Islands and Pacific Ocean—followed by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the awe-inspiring Ebb + Flow Lounge. Smaller spaces are also available for more intimate (but no less spectacular!) events.
Live music is welcome—they've had everything from jazz piano to rock to mariachi bands and even the USC marching band. And, of course, your dining experience will be as impeccable as the venue: The talented chef and culinary team are used to catering to a discerning clientele with delectable libations and elevated food experiences, putting a contemporary spin on classic favorites and new creations alike.
