A shining example of how to renovate a cherished old building, The Rotunda in downtown Oakland is a jewel that's been polished to perfection. Built in 1912 as Kahn's, an elegant department store, it closed in 1984 but was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and later designated an Oakland Landmark. Meticulously restored in 2000, this Beaux Arts beauty now sparkles brightly as an upscale collection of office suites with a jaw-dropping event venue at its core.

Distinctive from the outside, it's positively fabulous inside. The palatial, circular Lobby boasts striking terrazzo flooring, tall plaster archways, and a ceiling that soars 120 feet overhead. Ringed by an ornate mezzanine and a series of upper tiers, the space draws your eye upward, first to the classic columns adorned with sculpted friezes and gilded embellishments and finally to the crowning glory—the stunning 5,000-square-foot elliptical dome of leaded glass. Illuminated by natural light flooding in during the day or awash in colorful lighting at night, it will take your breath away.

The main floor's majestic double-sided staircase, featuring original turn-of-the-century light fixtures, becomes the focal point for your dramatic entrance and ceremony. You can exchange vows at the base or up on the huge landing that also functions as a raised stage for toasts and entertainment.

After the "I do"s, everyone is invited to the mezzanine level for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, before returning downstairs for dinner, dancing … and perhaps a show! With its grand proportions and general "wow" factor, The Rotunda is the perfect setting for something spectacular, like hosting a large ethnic wedding with all the accompanying pageantry, or a Cirque du Soleil-style aerial performance. Watching daring acrobats suspended from the dome execute gravity-defying feats will definitely give your friends and family something to remember.

And while we're talking about creating memorable moments here, you'll love being able to go up to the private rooftop for photos with City Hall and The Commons as your backdrop. You'll also love being treated like an A-lister from start to finish, thanks to the ace event management team. They can provide guidance and full-service planning for every aspect of your celebration, as well as recommendations on nearby hotels and sites to see in downtown Oakland and the Greater Bay Area.
