A Here Comes The Guide Wedding Venue Review

The charming home at the heart of Beltane Ranch dates back to 1892, when pioneering black entrepreneur Mary Ellen Pleasant came to Sonoma’s fabled Valley of the Moon and built it as a way to escape—and celebrate—the great business success she had enjoyed in San Francisco.

It’s easy to see what drew her to this spot. A narrow drive flanked by ancient oaks, vineyards, grassy fields, and beautiful hand-built stone walls leads up to Beltane, which nestles beneath the trees atop a gentle slope. The house Mary Ellen created is a two-story, five-room, wooden confection, graced with delicate lathed railings and Victorian-style wood trim, as well as grand verandas outfitted with wicker furnishings. The front of the residence is bordered by a flower garden enclosed by a classic white picket fence.

Next to the house are two lawns used for ceremonies. The larger one, which has views of the vineyard, is edged with flowerbeds, low stone walls, and towering oaks. A stage for the DJ in one corner is festooned with strings of lights that cast a festive glow at night. The smaller lawn right behind the house is more intimate, and a garden area near the trellised entrance to the main house often hosts small receptions. There’s also a rustic horse barn that makes a delightful setting for rehearsal dinners and other small gatherings.

A still-working ranch that raises cattle, grows olives and grapes, and produces its own wine, Beltane evokes Old Sonoma from the days before the county became an upscale destination. Its vibrant gardens have evolved over the years and seem part of the landscape. Bridal party members often enjoy breakfast fruit harvested from raspberry bushes planted decades ago by the owner’s grand aunt. Another attraction is the stand-alone cottage, a cozy hideaway featuring a hardwood floor, antique rugs, a firebox, sitting area, private bath, and a small garden and deck overlooking the main lawn.

Beltane is proud of its seasoned staff, many of whom have been at the property for at least 20 years. Not surprisingly, the ranch has earned a reputation for great service. Quite a few newlyweds return for their anniversaries, and the ranch has even welcomed the children of couples who’ve been married here!

One of Beltane’s most appreciated services is their in-house catering. Their chef will custom-design a menu for up to 50 guests that showcases their sustainable estate-grown organic produce, olive oil, and wine pairings…and they can take care of your rehearsal dinner and brunch, too!

Owned by the same family since the 1930s and surrounded by 1,000 acres of open-space preserve, its 100 acres are the ideal place to hold a true Sonoma County country wedding. Everything here—the venue and its surroundings—blends seamlessly to create a perfect pastoral stage.
