Questions and Answers
What 3 words best describe your work?
Timeless, sincere, artistic.
Tell us about your company name.
Indigo West because I mostly practice my photography in the Western states and my favorite light is just after the sunset when the horizons start fading into different shades of the color Indigo.
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I was drawn to photography as early as I can remember. In childhood, it quickly became my sketchbook as I worked to capture stills of the world and people around me. Those images have continued to pay emotional dividends throughout my life, helping me better understand what I have now come to see through a new scope. They are grounding, melancholic, funny, and beautiful. Some of my most cherished possessions.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
The work done by the early pioneer photojournalists is the stuff that most inspires me. Photographers like Danny Lyon and Diane Arbus are simply genius, raw, and beautiful.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or very interesting moment at a wedding:
I most recently shot a wedding for a groom that is highly autistic. Found out during speeches/toasts that he is the leading expert on Artificial Intelligence at Google. It is amazing what people can contribute to our world when their specific brand of genius is appreciated and encouraged to develop.
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
Emotion. Whenever the couple is present in the overall experience.
What have weddings taught you?
That many relationship dynamics can work if both partners commit to empathy and making things work. It is a beautiful thing to know that there aren't rules as to what a marriage needs to look like and that each couple can define that for themselves.
What is the best advice you give a couple when planning their wedding?
Make it your own. You don't have to buy into all the formalities and constructs. The wedding should reflect you, and that's it.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
To be invisible!
What's your favorite book/movie/work of art?
Favorite book: An Imaginary Life by David Malouf
What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Listen to music while I reacquaint myself with the night stars.
