Why We Like This Place
If you’re a fan of old Hollywood glamour but your groom’s more a hipster … or you lean toward a garden setting while he prefers an urban vibe, don’t despair because there’s actually a perfect wedding venue for both of you. The Lafayette Hotel, originally built in the 1940s, ingeniously mixes elements of its storied history with the vibrancy and edginess of its revitalized North Park location in the ultimate mash-up.
A vintage marquee and circular drive lead to the grand, red brick Colonial building, fronted by soaring white columns. Inside, the lobby features ornate coffered ceilings, crown molding and a sparkling crystal chandelier. Among the eclectic décor are a plush round settee and baby grand piano—great for lounging and taking some fun, flirty album shots.
Just beyond two open archways, you’ll find their totally unique ceremony site: the Conservatory. This huge space is bathed in natural light streaming in from an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling multipaned windows and French Doors that serve as the backdrop for your ceremony. Now before you start imagining something prim and proper, take a look up: Suspended from the high, translucent ceiling are dozens of colorful, upside-down parasols giving the entire area a whimsical, garden atmosphere. Seating for your guests offers an equally unexpected twist with a wonderful mélange of wingback, ladder-back, upholstered and Chiavari chairs.
Then when you’re ready to pop open the champagne, step outside to the lovely curved Veranda overlooking the hotel’s centerpiece swimming pool. Designed in 1946 by Olympic great Johnny Weissmuller, it instantly became a mecca for locals as well as L.A. celebs like Ava Gardner and Bob Hope. Today, after recent renovations, Lafayette’s pool scene once again reigns supreme. But if you prefer a more intimate spot for your “I do”s and cocktails, try the tucked-away West Courtyard, where you can have an open-sky affair or one that’s covered with a canopy of billowing fabric.
For an unforgettable reception, the pièce de résistance is, without doubt, the Mississippi Ballroom. Located on its own floor, it’s like stepping into a whole other world of Hollywood soirées and elegant supper clubs. This amazing, two-tiered ballroom features soft recessed lighting inside its circular, coffered ceiling; columns with etched flourishes; and even the original hardwood dance floor. But most stunning of all is the stage with its knockout, backlit clamshell that adds high drama to your live band/DJ, first dance or even sweetheart table. This is just not something you see every day! And there’s even a small garden right outside the ballroom where you can smoke a cigar while stargazing.
With comfy rooms for you and your guests, menu selections that’ll make you want to try everything, a helpful staff, and an endearing mix of retro touches with modern quirks, this venue may be what marriage is all about—combining diverse elements to create something even better than its individual parts.
