Why We Like This Place
Once the spiritual sanctuary of the Chumash Indians, the Ojai Valley still draws romantics seeking artistic inspiration, balm for body and soul, and an idyllic getaway. Famous for its "pink moment," when the resplendent Topa Topa mountains take on a rosy glow at sunset, Ojai's paradisiacal environs were the location for the film classic, Lost Horizon—and the pastoral valley is still considered Southern California's Shangri-La. Bridal couples are especially attuned to Ojai's magical allure, ever-so-stylishly expressed at the legendary Ojai Valley Inn.
A sublime refuge from workaday cares, the historic resort lavishes visitors with modern luxuries, while remaining in harmony with Ojai's natural beauty. An extravagant $90-million makeover was showcased in Architectural Digest, and the Inn's awards and accolades—such as a coveted place in Condé Nast's "Gold List"—just keep on coming! The renovation enhanced the Inn's traditional Spanish Revival architecture with exquisite custom tile and ironwork, and Moroccan fire pits are among the eclectic additions. Warm, inviting interiors are meticulously outfitted with sumptuous materials and vivid, Mediterranean-inspired colors. Everywhere, soaring arched windows capture breathtaking vistas and luxuriant gardens.
The divine event areas are spread over 220 landscaped acres. Among our favorites is the Herb Garden and Event Lawn, which flourishes over a terraced hillside awash with flowering aromatic herbs. Garden paths meander beneath the dappled shade of fruit trees, culminating at a lovely arbor entwined with wisteria. Open-air receptions spread out across a carpet of lawn below the garden.
For the ultimate in privacy, move your entire wedding party into one of the Villa Courtyards. These exclusive "resorts within a resort" offer hacienda-style accommodations wrapped around cozy plazas with splashing fountains. In one courtyard silvery green foliage highlights a resplendent palette of white roses flanked by ivory-blossomed magnolia trees; in another a view-filled horizon of rolling, oak-studded hillsides, green fairways and avocado groves makes an enchanting backdrop for a ceremony.
Formal receptions unfold in the resort's gorgeously arrayed grand ballroom, which opens onto a patio with a fireplace. Or go country-casual at the inn's Big Red Barn down the road, part of a one-time working ranch that's complete with hay bales, outdoor ceremony area and indoor bar. Guests of honor can even make their arrival in a horse-drawn carriage!
Before you transform from bachelorette to bride, visit the inn's world-renowned Spa Village, where a community of wellness experts will leave you feeling ultra-pampered and revitalized. An Artist Cottage & Apothecary and Mind Body Gym complement a full menu of therapeutic and aesthetic body treatments with enticing names like "Petals" and "Nirvana," and first-rate salon services will have you and your wedding party looking your best.
The comprehensive inn is an ideal venue for destination events—numerous on-site activities and nearby wilderness trails and local galleries keep out-of-towners entertained. What's more, with so many diverse banquet spaces, each phase of your weekend celebration can be staged in a different environment, including the resort's acclaimed restaurants. FYI: we're not the only tough critics who've swooned over the superior gourmet cuisine, made particularly savory by the use of fresh local ingredients.
Though a world apart in atmosphere, Ojai is an easy, scenic half-hour drive from Ventura beaches; and, while not for the budget-challenged, this landmark resort has so much to rave about, including impeccable service, that we urge you to sample its charms yourself.
