Questions and Answers
What 3 words describe your work?
Detailed. Personal. Creative.
Tell us about your company name.
My father passed away in 2002 and I started my company 3 years later. My mother always told me I carried my father's legacy—and I wanted to honor him. His nickname was Sterling; so including that within my company name seemed like a natural fit. For about 3 weeks I'd think to myself, 'Sterling Events', 'Sterling Weddings', Sterling everything... Sterling Engagements came to me one day and I just loved the way it flowed, so it stuck and I've never looked back.
Why should someone hire you?
Because I'm fabulous! I'm absolutely meticulous, detail oriented, love to design, have a true passion for making my client's day perfect and ultimately really care about each and every event I produce.
What are the common misconceptions about your services?
That people don't need a planner or hiring a planner is a luxury. I believe everyone deserves to feel extra special on their day, whether it's a big wedding or small, and it's definitely not just a luxury anymore—it's truly become a necessity. Our services allow our clients to enjoy their day stress-free and it goes by so fast I would never want them to miss a moment because they're worrying about something we can handle!
What drew you to this field/how did you get started?
I started with an internship in college and fell in love instantly. I'm a hopeless romantic and it just seemed too good to be true. Once I started I really could not stop. With each event I worked, I was anxiously waiting to work the next one.
What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
I'm inspired daily. Sometimes by nature, sometimes through fashion or architecture, sometimes by my clients, and oftentimes it could be over the most random thing, like a store window display or even the way an entrée is presented in a restaurant.
Tell us about a favorite, unusual or most interesting moment at a wedding:
Favorite moment at a wedding was the very first time I saw a first look. It was incredible. I cried in the corner as I watched and have been a huge fan of this moment ever since. I was originally against seeing the groom prior and now I've done a complete flip—the emotion captured in photographs during that moment is extraordinary!
What makes a wedding memorable for you?
The experience I help create for my brides and grooms, their families and the guests. It's so special and I love making the experience everything my clients dreamed of and really more!
What have weddings taught you?
How to survive on your feet for 16 hours and still not get sick of it! The more weddings I do, the more I want to do. It never gets old!
What is the best advice you give to a couple when planning their wedding?
To breathe, take each and every moment in all the time and consistently communicate. Always remember why you are here and how you got to this point; your love.
If you could have any superpower on the job, what would it be?
The power to be in multiple places at once for sure! I'd love to be able to overlook everything. Unfortunately I cannot; however, I do have the Sterling team and our girls are pretty incredible in supporting me in each event we produce.
What are 3 words that describe your personality?
Vivacious. Dedicated. Sensitive.
What's your favorite book/movie/work of art?
Books would probably be The Great Gatsby or Fahrenheit 451, although I do enjoy anything by Sophie Kinsella. Movie is definitely Pretty Woman, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Notting Hill. Work of art would probably be Starry Night, although I love all art.
What is your favorite quote?
That's tough, I love so many. Probably the saying that "Everything happens for a reason" and "What's meant to be, will be."
What's your favorite marriage advice?
Never go to bed angry, and always say I love you—morning, noon and night!
Cooking, entertaining, my dogs, volunteering and spending time with family.
If you weren't in your current profession, what would you do instead?
I'd love to own a restaurant, love to be in PR, would have loved to go to Law School. I also really want a boutique someday. I'd be a great shopper to stock it with everything fun.
What's your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Comfy clothes, a glass of wine and any TV drama that I can get lost in.
Tell us about your pets, if you have any.
I have the most amazing dogs ever. They were both rescued and are so special to me. Jackson was my first dog on my own, a Puggle. Kalle is a shepherd mix that loves to love!
What are some of your favorite places to eat—either everyday spots or special occasion splurges?
I love the Cheesecake Factory, Marmalade Café and Maestro's. I'm a big fish eater so Midori Sushi is another favorite.
