Why We Like This Place

What's old and new and cool all over? It's the absolutely fabulous Hotel Shattuck Plaza, a venue that artfully blends its historic roots with a fresh, hip ambiance. Located in downtown Berkeley at the nexus of the city's cultural, gastronomic and academic centers, this recently renovated boutique hotel holds enormous appeal for those seeking a sophisticated, yet relaxed, place for their wedding or special event.

When you step into the lobby, you can't help but notice the high ceiling, sleek front desk, and pop of color from the bright red chandelier. It's a mix of elements that make the space feel open, airy, and even a bit playful, all at the same time. Throughout the hotel's interior, a bold, black-and-white motif perfectly plays off century-old architectural details like the original columns, cornices and decorative friezes. Look down at the checkerboard marble flooring and you'll see that they've even included a sly homage to the city's activist reputation with an inlaid peace sign.

To the right is a beautiful bar with sightlines to their much-lauded restaurant, FIVE. This stunning space can be completely cleared of furniture to create a breathtaking ceremony site. The soaring, coffered ceiling, dark wood floors, dazzling original 1900s glass-and-crystal chandelier, and floor-to-ceiling Palladium windows combine for sheer elegance. And talk about making an entrance—you'll walk down a long center aisle flanked by rows of towering classic columns!

Cocktails can be served outside on the brick-floored Courtyard, with a lower level for canapé displays and serving stations. If you prefer to raise a glass of bubbly indoors, there's the adjacent Historic Boiler Room, which has been transformed with a high tray ceiling, skylight, and double glass doors into an inviting spot for more intimate celebrations. Another option for smaller groups is the Whitecotton Room up on the sixth floor. Its graceful coved ceiling and a series of arched windows give this private hideaway a quiet charm—and downtown views.

But, for full-tilt glamour, you must see the Crystal Ballroom. Grand in scale, it features huge, fan-shaped, framed mirrors; a coffered ceiling; and lots of crystal chandeliers (of course). We especially love the chic, black-and-white striped wallpaper, which adds an inspired touch of haute design. The space comes with its own prefunction area, where you can serve cocktails and set up a photo booth or dessert bar.

After the party winds down, retreat to your complimentary honeymoon suite. Out-of-town guests will also enjoy staying overnight in their upscale rooms, savoring the hotel's innovative cuisine, and discovering everything Berkeley has to offer. The hotel is also a great home base for taking day trips to explore the Bay Area, like sightseeing in San Francisco or wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma.
