Why We Like This Place

The San Francisco Film Centre is an in-demand urban event venue that also happens to be in one of the city's most beautiful settings. It occupies an elegant Mission-style building originally designed to house enlisted men and officers stationed at the Presidio. Although it never fulfilled its function as a military residence, it's found another calling: In 1999 the Film Centre undertook an extensive renovation, and today it's a multi-use facility providing a variety of resources to the public as well as the film and media community.

Events are held in the amazingly versatile Palm Room. Fresh white walls and columns along with Australian Eucalyptus hardwood floors lend a sophistication to the space. During the day sunlight streams in through attractively shaded multipaned windows, illuminating the room and making the floors gleam (subtle track lighting makes them shimmer at night). East and west windows afford views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the Main Post and the Presidio's meticulously landscaped grounds. Floor-to-ceiling French doors open onto a covered Spanish-tile veranda, creating a wonderful indoor-outdoor flow. This terrace is distinguished by 13 graceful arches and wrought-iron railings, and when the weather is warm or heaters are added it's ideal for a cocktail reception. Some parties turn it into a lounge with comfy couches and chairs.

We think the Palm Room is quite inviting as is, but you're encouraged to give it your personal stamp and indulge your imagination. For example, use colored uplights and the adjustable track lighting to set the mood or match your décor, or place couches and carpets in one section for a clubby atmosphere. Another plus: the room's excellent acoustics are great for a DJ or band.

The most popular place for exchanging vows is at the top of the stairs in front of the centre's historic arched doors, which make a perfect frame for the couple as well as a unique backdrop for photos. Guests are seated on the lawn below, and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge is visible in the distance. Other ceremony options include the veranda and a smaller lawn on the opposite side of the building. Whichever site you choose, it's just a short walk to your reception in the Palm Room.

In addition to weddings, the Film Centre is also a great choice for film screenings, fundraisers, art installations, corporate functions and parties of all kinds. The Palm Room can be sectioned into breakout areas, while the veranda is frequently used for a buffet setup or wine tasting. Retreats often conduct sessions out on the lawns, and the Conference Room is available for the bridal party or for smaller meetings and groups. There's even an intimate Screening Room that seats 24 for a lecture or presentation. Downstairs, a professionally equipped catering kitchen adds to the long list of amenities that give the centre its marvelous flexibility.

Gorgeous surroundings, a wonderful venue, and plenty of parking are all part of your experience at the San Francisco Film Centre—and you get to celebrate in the city but feel like you're miles from one.
