Lisa’s Slice of Honeymoon Heaven: L’Auberge Del Mar
by Lisa Edd, Managing Editor
Confession time: I’m one of those pitiful wives who never had a honeymoon. My husband and I were young and seriously cash poor—plus, hubby was still in grad school and had to get back to class just after the wedding (cue the sad little violin). As a direct result of my HDS (that’s Honeymoon Deprivation Syndrome—and I just made it up, so don’t bother Googling it), my mind often wanders when I find a resort that offers everything I’ve ever dreamed of in a honeymoon.
It’s an occupational hazard, working where I work, but if you have to have an occupational hazard, it might as well include jaw-dropping photos of sunsets, luxurious spa treatments, yummy food, and posh-but-not-pretentious surroundings.
My hands-down honeymoon pick (and I’ve thought about this a lot over the years, so trust me on this one!) is San Diego’s L’Auberge Del Mar. This place has all the amenities of one of those big-name resorts, but with an intimate, boutique hotel feel that I just love. Even the balcony windows have drama: you can fling them open to bring the salty sea air into your plush, sun-drenched ocean-view room. We’d opt for room service and dine on our own private patio, then cozy up to a fire—all without leaving our room.
I’m a sucker for a great spa, and Spa L’Auberge’s Seaside Sojourns packages are uniquely wonderful: They offer medleys of scents and spices to virtually transport you to far-off exotic regions like Morocco or the Amazon for 110 minutes as you’re exfoliated, wrapped, and massaged into pure bliss.
Nearby Del Mar Village has fab shopping and over 50 restaurants to choose from, and I can leave the planning to L’Auberge and have the staff arrange for amazing day trips-for-two like a picnic in Temecula Wine Country or a hot air balloon ride. Nine years later, I can’t imagine a better place to pause and soak up the California sunshine with my husband.
