Why We Like This Place
It’s always exciting to see a historic property given new life and purpose, especially when it’s done with the integrity and charm of The Villa Del Sol, an enticing haven right in the center of Fullerton’s Old Town. The original Spanish Colonial-styled California Hotel has been imaginatively revitalized to house a collection of boutiques, restaurants and businesses that surround an alluring center courtyard, making this delightful 1920s landmark a winning choice for an outdoor wedding.
When you enter the massive wrought-iron gates and pass beneath the vintage black chandelier, you immediately leave the bustle and activity of Harbor Boulevard behind. The white stucco building, which still maintains most of its period details—like the red-tiled roof, decorative setbacks and shaded porticos—encloses a beautiful brick courtyard the size of a village square. Taking center stage, a Spanish-tiled fountain adds to the soothing atmosphere of this al fresco oasis. Directly behind the fountain is what was once the main entrance to Fullerton’s first luxury inn, and the word “California” is still proudly visible on its façade. Landscaped with islands of palm trees and flowers, the courtyard boasts even more greenery in ivy-covered breezeways that wrap around the entire area and shade the entries to unique shops offering custom floral arrangements, vintage jewelry, designer clothing, photography services, salon/spa treatments and more. Several storefronts are so picturesque that past couples have opted to take their vows in front of one of them, instead of the fountain or hotel archway! And, of course, it’s incredibly convenient to utilize the stores’ expertise in planning your special day.
Once you’ve said “I do,” you can take advantage of The Villa del Sol’s graceful arches, wrought-iron railings and towering turrets as backdrops for your photo album. Invite your guests to enjoy cocktails either in the courtyard or on the upstairs balcony, a sweeping second-floor terrace that provides bird’s-eye views of the courtyard below as well as vistas of downtown Fullerton framed by the graceful colonnades.
Although you can customize the flow of your event, dinner is generally served at elegantly appointed tables in the courtyard. As for the food itself, you can either bring in your own caterer or savor the specialties prepared expressly for you by one of the four very popular resident restaurants: Café Hidalgo (authentic dishes from Mexico, Spain and Latin America); The Cellar (first-class Continental with an extensive wine list); Brownstone Café (home-style cooking and catering); or Stadium Tavern (casual favorites).
As night falls, lights strung across the courtyard twinkle and lanterns hung from top-floor walkways cast their magical glow over a scene your guests will not soon forget. And when the party ends, friends and family can skip the hassle of driving because the train station is just blocks away, making it easy to catch an Amtrak or Metroliner home.
