UCLA Faculty Center

Why We Like This Place

Set in a sun-dappled grove of pine and eucalyptus, the UCLA Faculty Center is a handsome, cross-gabled contemporary building. One story high and brick-red in color, this refreshing venue provides a welcome retreat from the bustling (and sometimes stressful) halls of academe. For almost half a century, the Center has not only regaled faculty with its fine gourmet cuisine, but it has also doubled as a lovely spot for weddings and receptions.

If your plans call for a wedding that falls in the spring or summer, then consider exchanging vows on either of the Faculty Center’s two outdoor patios. The more private of the two—the California Patio—is skirted by a redwood fence and shaded by stands of pine and eucalyptus. Theater-style seating works well here, and guests will undoubtedly appreciate the patio’s breezy, peaceful ambiance. Potted geraniums, ficus trees, redwood benches and old-fashioned street lamps are nice touches. Sharing a similar décor is the Rose Garden Patio, suited for smaller al fresco ceremonies, or cocktail and hors d’oeuvre receptions. Enlivened by roses and big terracotta pots overflowing with impatiens, this L-shaped patio sports white garden furniture and royal blue umbrellas. Overhead, a 25-year-old bougainvillea makes a vibrant pink splash, sensuously wrapping itself around a redwood-beam trellis. Tall heat lamps take the chill off a cool evening.

Adjoining the California Patio is the California Room, perfect for winter ceremonies and receptions. Featuring an exposed whitewashed wood ceiling and blue- and cream-colored walls, this long, linear space retains the casual air of an oceanside beach house. Twin rows of ceiling lights running the length of the room create a theatrical effect, spotlighting the bride as she walks down the aisle.

Lastly there’s the Faculty Center’s expansive A-frame Main Dining Room. An exceptional space for revelries and receptions, this setting captured our hearts. Here floor-to-ceiling ribbon windows surround the room on three sides, allowing for a remarkable influx of light. A gorgeous, 24-foot-high vaulted ceiling, supported by sandblasted wood beams, heightens the generous dimensions still further. Autumn hued wall-to-wall carpeting adds warmth, while suspended domed lights provide a soft luminescence. On frosty nights, spark a romantic mood by setting a fire in the massive cut-stone fireplace.

Striking a beautiful balance between elegance and simplicity, the UCLA Faculty Center is an excellent choice for a celebration, day or night. Swing on by and you’ll see why this facility earns high marks from us.
