Why We Like This Place

You can have it all—a romantic setting, delectable cuisine, and gracious service—at the Sunset Restaurant, tucked against the Malibu bluffs just steps from Zuma Beach. Housed in an updated version of a classic beach bungalow, the two-story restaurant breathes with space and light, thanks to the expanse of windows along the front wall. One of the many benefits of staging your wedding at the Sunset is the ease of having everything in one package. This venue is particularly event-friendly, with distinct areas that coordinate with each phase of a wedding celebration.

First, say your marriage vows right on the beach. For a fee that includes the city permit, the Sunset arranges a platform walkway, runner and a wood stage area with the blue Pacific as a vibrant backdrop. Other elements further enhance this idyllic place: Sailboats drift across the horizon…a pelican dives for its dinner…the sound of the waves is in soothing harmony with the music of your accompanist. As you walk down the aisle, a light breeze lifts your veil, which floats around you like sea foam. Your guests are entranced, and the fun is only beginning. (This writer knows from personal experience: She had her wedding here, and the guests are still raving!)

After the ceremony, your photographer captures dramatic photos of the bridal party during one of Malibu’s jewel-toned sunsets. Meanwhile, your friends and family gather on the outdoor patio that adjoins the Event Room. Here they enjoy the cocktail hour and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres, while mingling around cocktail tables or relaxing on couches. You can add your own festive touches with colored paper lanterns, string lights or vibrant throw pillows.

When it’s time for the reception, everyone moves into the Event Room. Simple, yet classy, its understated decor adapts easily to your own vision…but this room has a couple of tasteful features that add to your celebration: The ceiling is draped with white fabric that lends a wavy softness to the space, and a row of view-filled windows curves shoreward, like a long ripple in the nearby surf. At some point during your festivities, you might drift outside with your sweetheart to stroll on the sugary sand and soak up a bit of moonlight.

Two cozy upstairs venues, the North and South Rooms, prove that the views are even more spectacular from the second floor. Picture windows keep these spaces bathed in golden daylight, when the warm, cheery ambiance is perfect for wedding brunches or showers; at night, star-filled horizons and city-light vistas are sparkling additions to rehearsal dinners.

The Sunset Restaurant, which is open for weekend brunch and dinner nightly, has a large number of regular (and often celebrity!) clientele and attracts more loyal fans every day. After paying a visit to this divine seaside locale, you’re bound to become a regular, too.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The beach holds up to 150 seated guests.

EVENT/RECEPTION & MEETING CAPACITY: Indoors, the restaurant holds 120 seated with a dance floor or 140 without, or 200 standing guests. Outdoors the parking lot may be tented for 200 guests or 300 standing.

Fees & Deposits

10% of the estimated event total (or $1,500) is required to reserve your date and another 40% is due 4 months prior to the event. Both deposits are nonrefundable. Rental fees range $500–10,000 depending on space and time rented and guest count. Meals range $45–110/person and there is a beverage minimum of $20/person. Tax, 20% service charge and mandatory valet charges are additional.
