Why We Like This Place

For more than four decades, Anthony’s Star of the Sea restaurant was San Diego’s “go-to” place for celebrating life’s special occasions. Located at the north end of the Embarcadero between Anthony’s Fish Grotto (owned by the same family) and the Maritime Museum, its combination of unbeatable bay views, fine dining and impeccable service made for a most memorable evening. Now, the beautifully renovated and renamed Star of the Sea Event Center offers all that plus exclusivity: You have the entire facility for just you and your guests. That’s great news for brides looking for a chic venue with a unique waterfront setting.

And, by the way, when we say “waterfront” we don’t mean by the water. We mean on the water—literally. Built atop pilings, Star of the Sea juts out into the bay itself, giving you the feeling that you’re aboard a combination luxury yacht/supper club.

Behind a private, decorative iron fence, a set of double glass entry doors opens to a foyer, where a sandblasted mural of a fantasy mermaid beckons you into her domain. Straight ahead is a sophisticated, black granite bar adorned with sparkling blown-glass pendant lights and a row of sleek chrome chairs with circular backs resembling the inside of a conch shell and seat cushions evocative of waves. To the left is the Lounge, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass panels—sandblasted along the bottom like undulating dunes—that provide a glimpse of the Embarcadero. But the pièce de résistance is the large Dining Room to the right, occupying the lion’s share of the center.

Bathed in sunlight flowing in through wraparound picture windows that frame superlative views of the water, boats, Harbor Island and the Point Loma hills in the distance, this main event space is mesmerizing. Although it’s hard to take your eyes off the tableau outside, the interior incorporates some visually pleasing features, too, such as a curving cornice running the length of the room, a slightly domed barrel ceiling with pinpoint lights, and thick-cushioned, comfy chairs.

Many couples hold their ceremony in the Dining Room against that gorgeous aquatic backdrop. Then, while the room is being reset for dinner, guests can enjoy cocktails in the Bar and Lounge, or outdoors on the private wooden deck that wraps around two sides of the venue. From here, (or inside the Dining Room for that matter) they’ll be treated to a dynamic show: historic ships such as the neighboring Star of India, pirate ships taking tourists out to sea, a private catamaran tacking into the wind, or even a Navy training session with dolphins or seals.

As night falls and the harbor lights twinkle, your guests can dance to your favorite band or DJ. You can even program your own music by syncing your iPod through Star of the Sea’s sound system. In fact, each event is completely customized. The center provides a wide array of preferred vendors who will create the celebration you envision.

Fees & Deposits

50% of the total event cost is required to reserve your date and the balance is due 7 days prior to the event. Rental fees range $750–1,500 depending on the day and time of the event. Meals range $35–50/person. Tax, alcohol and a 20% service charge are additional.
