Why We Like This Place
It’s hard to imagine a variety of plant that isn’t represented in this botanical wonderland. Here you are surrounded with foliage of all kinds, from the spiny cacti of desert regions to the most exotic flowers of tropical climes. The block-long area of immaculate gardens, patios and conservatories is linked by wide brick walkways, beds blooming with seasonal flowers and bubbling tile fountains. Although it’s open to the public every day from 10:30 to 4, after that the garden is available for your private pleasure.
Your guests can stroll to their hearts’ content through the Big Shade House, a melange of trees, ferns and waterfalls, or the jungle-like Conservatory, a tropical greenhouse filled with orchids, bromeliads and a koi pond. A wisteria-covered arbor on the Tea Garden Patio provides a sublime location for ceremonies. Baskets of begonias hang overhead, and since the Sherman Gardens’ color specialist ensures that flowers of all hues will be in bloom year-round, any bridal color scheme will find a perfect match. The adjacent Pepper Tree Patio, shaded by—what else—a large and delicate-leafed pepper tree, is a lovely spot for serving drinks or hors d’oeuvres.
For indoor receptions, Sherman Gardens offers the Central Patio Room, a vintage space with a cathedral ceiling, gray wood beams and skylights. A hand-painted Brazilian tile mural covers the wall above a large white-brick fireplace, and terracotta-tiled floors warmed by hot water flowing underneath ensure that you and your guests will be comfortable even in winter. On warm evenings you can open the French doors that line two sides and let your party overflow onto the covered terrace. It’s not surprising that Sherman Gardens has become a sought-after location for weddings; even those with their own green thumbs will be impressed with this little piece of paradise.
