Why We Like This Place

Commanding an enviable location on the pristine shores of Harbor Island, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina combines the refreshing ambiance of a seaside refuge with the deluxe amenities of the finest hostelries, including sophisticated dining, a state-of-the-art Spa and Fitness Center and plush accommodations with spacious private balconies. Recreation options also abound (Tennis, anyone? Bike riding or scuba diving?). Yet the most spectacular feature of this two-towered establishment has got to be its unmatched panoramic views. The West Tower faces the action at the harbor and marina where sleek pleasure craft either bob in their moorings or wend their way out to sea. To the east, twinkling city lights fill the million-dollar vista with the nighttime energy of a dynamic metropolis.

Recently favored with a $35-million renovation, this urban resort also boasts an astonishing 120,000 square feet of award-winning event space, including some of the prettiest ceremony sites we’ve seen: On the marina side, the Garden Terrace bursts with multihued flowers and bushes. Fragrant white tea roses, lavender, gardenia, jasmine, box hedges and magnolia trees line a latticed arbor walkway, winding to a fountain created solely to soothe the spirits of brides as they prepare to take those momentous steps down the aisle. Beyond an arched, white lattice gate, friends and family assemble, taking their seats on an always-perfect lawn alongside the water. Another site, the Bayview Lawn, is nestled under shade trees near the East Tower and offers southerly views of passing ships.

If you prefer a ceremony at sea, board a private yacht and have the captain officiate your wedding. Participate in the tradition of scattering rose petals to the wind, and watch the waves carry them to the horizon.

During the cocktail hour, numerous patios, terraces, and lounges allow guests to mingle in the glow of the setting sun, perhaps taking in the customary evening regatta or departing ocean liners. Clear glass panels surrounding some patios allow unobstructed views comfortably protected from ocean breezes. Then it’s off to one of the Sheraton’s half-dozen versatile ballrooms for dinner and dancing. Whether you choose an intimate room for 10 or the 100,000-square-foot tented Bayshore Pavilion for 1,500 of your closest friends, the hotel can accommodate any size reception.

The Bel Aire Ballroom, for example, is a popular choice, with marble walls complemented by understated striped wallpaper and navy carpet, and an immense mirrored chandelier that evokes icicles dangling in a winter castle. Like the Bel Aire, most of the venue’s reception spaces boast spectacular floor-to-ceiling views of the water or city skyline. Seated on custom-made blue-striped parlor chairs, your guests will savor their gourmet food served on fine English white porcelain china and drink from posh stemware.
