Why We Like This Place

If event sites were rated by their “cool” factor, Shade would be off the charts. This luxuriously hip, five-star boutique hotel perfectly captures the breezy, laid-back essence of its seaside community. Shade’s super-convenient location at the edge of Metlox Plaza puts you just two blocks from the beach and steps away from a wide variety of shops and restaurants.

As you walk through the hotel, the trappings of “cool” are everywhere, from the flower-filled vases that seem to float like magic in front of the mirrored wall in the lounge to the eye-catching cyclone fireplaces in many of the guest rooms. Accents such as handmade sea urchin chandeliers and an artful display of sea ferns are visual links to the nearby ocean.

The setting is an inspired one for a destination wedding (not to mention a wrap party, corporate bash or product launch). Although you can reserve individual areas for your event, we recommend “The Ultimate Wedding” package: booking the entire hotel—including its 38 guest rooms—for the weekend. You’ll not only have a fabulous home-to-die-for all to yourselves, you’ll be free to choreograph your celebration exactly as you like, taking advantage of the dynamic flow between Shade’s unique spaces.

You might want to kick things off with cocktails on the slate-tiled rooftop Skydeck, where your guests can mingle over martinis and mojitos while checking out the view of Manhattan Beach and the Pacific, spread out below. Then everyone gathers downstairs for your ceremony in the Courtyard, Shade’s signature space. Enclosed on three sides by the hotel, this versatile open-air venue works well for daytime or evening events. Couples exchange vows on the tile-and-stone steps at the far end, with a striking 20-foot-high stone waterfall behind them. Walls of ivy framing the waterfall and planters sprouting bright green bamboo add natural bursts of color. Fabric banners or colored lighting can be strung overhead for a dramatic effect, and brides often use one of the second-story balconies facing the Courtyard for the bouquet toss.

Après-ceremony, the party moves into the Zinc Lounge for hors d’oeuvres and more drinks while the Courtyard is reset for the reception. The mix of warm cherrywood, cool steel, and soft lighting create a sultry atmosphere. Folding glass doors open to the Zinc Terrace, the perfect al fresco spot for nursing that sub-zero martini (in a glass made of ice) and people-watching in the plaza below.

Dinner is served back in the Courtyard, which has been transformed into as casual or elegant a scene as you wish. And if you need more space for that extra-long guest list, additional seating can be arranged in the Green Room upstairs. It overlooks the Courtyard, so celebrants on both floors will still feel connected.

The staff at Shade are finicky about everything, and they almost never say “no” to anything. They’ll help you plan your dream wedding, including a customized menu based on the freshest, highest quality products. They’ll even replicate your grandmother’s Swedish meatballs!

Fees & Deposits

50% of the event minimum is required to reserve your date and the balance is due 10 days prior to the event. Minimums range $2,000–25,000 depending on the date and time of the event. Meals range $35–100/person. Tax, alcohol and a 22% service charge are additional.
