Why We Like This Place
We’re intrigued whenever we hear about a venue that’s been specifically designed for weddings. What that usually means is that the owner is serious about them, and has put a lot of effort into making their place extra wedding-friendly. Serendipity certainly fits that description.
Peaceful and secluded, this private estate has a superb location at the edge of a mountain canyon that overlooks an oak-sheltered creek. At 4,200 feet in the San Bernardino Mountains, it’s high enough to be ten or 15 degrees cooler than the flats below, making it popular for July and August weddings—something few outdoor wedding sites in the region can boast.
An array of pleasing elements makes for a nice whole here. First there are the flowers: The path connecting the ceremony and reception areas is flanked by hundreds of dazzling white rose bushes. The ceremony site itself, set halfway down the canyon slope, is a showstopper: Look south and there’s a panorama of the Inland Empire’s mountains and valleys. Look north, and the soaring granite peak of Mt. San Gorgonio looms imposingly, close enough to seem just a short drive away. Guests seated on a lawn face this inspiring view and the couple, who recite their vows on a simple wooden dais that’s easily adorned to taste. Off to one side, a small reed-filled pool teems with little freshwater critters—sweet symbols of the abundance of married life to come.
After the ceremony, guests gather on the new cocktail terrace, where they’re served the bride and groom’s signature cocktail and hand-passed hors d’oeuvres. From here they can watch the newlyweds posing for photos below, and take in the expansive view of the valley to the south.
When it’s time for the reception, everyone finds their table in Serendipity’s spacious and beautifully conceived outdoor dining and dancing area near the top of the property. It’s an expansive “patio,” made up of large stone-tiled squares separated by bright strips of grass that together form an appealing geometric pattern. Tables are arranged on the squares, there’s a permanent dance floor on one side (with the canyon as its dramatic backdrop), and a full bar with a blazing fireplace on the opposite side. The resulting setup encourages a convivial flow of people as they move from music to drink to mingling at tables. Most weddings here are evening affairs, taking advantage of the balmy air, the region’s glorious sunset colors, the romance of lights strung across the patio, and the glow of stars under a smog-free sky.
Serendipity’s all-inclusive wedding package covers a wide range of items, including catering, cake, flowers, a DJ, a golf cart shuttle for guests, and a horse-drawn carriage ride for the bride and groom to the ceremony site and reception area. Package services are provided by a select group of trusted, seasoned vendors, and there are no hidden charges.
When we asked Serendipity’s owner how this unique, weddings-only facility in the highlands has worked out, she clearly enjoyed answering the question: “Each bride tells me, ‘This is my little haven, my own piece of the mountain for a day.’”
