Why We Like This Place

With a global history stretching back 2,000 years, the sport of polo is a timeless symbol of tradition and fellowship; for the Central Coast, a similar respect for the enduring bonds of community and family is embodied in the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club, one of the oldest institutions of its kind in America.

Back at the turn of the century, a handful of wealthy polo enthusiasts fled the harsh East Coast climate to found their new polo club in Carpinteria. This congenial Santa Barbara neighbor boasts superb weather, resting at the base of the oak-clad Santa Ynez foothills within a stone’s throw of the Pacific Ocean.

Though the sport of polo seems synonymous with affluence and grandeur, SBPC has a well-earned reputation for refined, yet warm, hospitality. For decades the club has hosted everything from the most lavish charity events to intimate celebrations of personal milestones. Wedding ceremonies usually take place just outside the Polo Clubhouse on Field One, a beautifully landscaped expanse that extends from SBPC’s front fence to the edge of the hillside. The bride makes her grand entrance from the clubhouse, while her groom awaits her out on the field. In the background, the classic profile of Holden Ranch, a historic residence fringed with multicolored flowering shrubs, completes the picturesque tableau.

After “I do,” guests convene inside the landmark Clubhouse, decorated in classic hunter green and a mix of vintage and contemporary photographs and sporting memorabilia. A marble-topped bar at one end and a peaked natural wood-beam ceiling with antique-style fans enhance the clubhouse’s retro character. French doors open onto the Terrace, which has a tiled floor and translucent awnings. Paper lanterns strung overhead lend a romantic ambiance at night. The Terrace looks out over Holden Field, a vast spread of green punctuated by the rugged profile of the hills to the east. Filtered ocean views and refreshing sea breezes wafting in from the coast give the club a resort-like atmosphere, and evoke a sense of leisure synonymous with the Santa Barbara lifestyle.

While guests mingle inside, the wedding party poses for photos on the Clubhouse roof, where a 360-degree panorama of mountains and ocean makes a stunning backdrop. Back downstairs, the turf immediately adjoining the Terrace is set with tables and chairs for an al fresco fête, while the cake, entertainment and dancing hold court on the Terrace itself. Either field can also be tented for the ultimate indoor/outdoor experience. Catering is provided by the Pampered Palate, culinary experts whose exquisite presentations of California gourmet cuisine find inspiration in each season’s fresh bounty.

Veterans at producing all types of events, from celebrity-studded tournaments to cozy get-togethers, the dedicated professionals at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club will help you make the most of its scenic terrain.
