Why We Like This Place
Touted as “one location, a million scenes,” this thousand-acre privately owned estate in the hills of Malibu is a much sought-after film site. Which isn’t surprising: Saddlerock Ranch and Vineyard has views of the Conejo Valley, and is itself a veritable cornucopia of visual delights, with fruit and avocado orchards, acres of vineyards and pastureland dotted with heritage oaks and grazing herds of horses, cattle and llamas. Craggy rocks—including a landmark outcropping shaped like a saddle—jut up from vineyard-covered slopes, and ribbons of white fences meander alongside fields and tree-shaded driveways. Look carefully, and you’ll see a few peacocks or even a camel or zebra as you wind your way through the ranch.
Happily for you, all this scenic beauty is available for special events. Four separate areas lend themselves to wedding ceremonies: the rose garden adjacent to the estate’s main house; under the cascading fronds of a willow tree next to the rose garden; beneath a willow tree that overlooks a bucolic horse pasture (imagine mares and foals frolicking in the sun as morning mist rises from the fields); and lastly, under the branches of a 250-year-old oak, centered in a large grassy clearing surrounded by thickets of trees. Twinkle lights in the oak and nearby trees make this a spectacular spot for evening affairs, although the natural grandeur of the ranch doesn’t need much adornment.
Many couples like the convenience of having their reception on one of the expansive level lawns at each of the wedding sites, but there are numerous other possibilities. One couple covered the tennis courts near the oak tree with AstroTurf, decorated it with lights, and hosted a black-tie reception for 500. Another couple opted for a country western theme—they rode horses to their ceremony, and then celebrated with a barbecue.
Saddlerock’s newest event site is Chateau Le Dome, located on a hilltop in the middle of the ranch’s vineyards. The Chateau in this case is an octagonal stone house, set on a manicured lawn that’s large enough for a ceremony and reception. From this elevated vantage, you have panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards, valleys and pastures. As the bride prepares inside the house, guests take their seats for a ceremony on one side of the lawn. In keeping with the natural setting, vows are exchanged beneath a fallen oak-tree arch, entwined with grapevines. Afterwards, as friends and family dine in the serenity of their secluded perch, they’ll feel like they’re on top of the world.
Another appealing gathering area is the Malibu Wines Tasting Room, an expansive and artfully landscaped outdoor venue. Instead of the usual cocktail hour, why not treat your guests to an array of savory local vintages? The Tasting Room’s temperate hilltop climate and gorgeous views are the perfect accompaniments to a glass of Saddlerock Chardonnay or their award-winning Semler Merlot.
At Saddlerock Ranch you start with a breathtaking backdrop and add whatever props you like. Fill the sky with butterflies or doves, bring in an elephant, or wave goodbye to your guests from a helicopter or hot-air balloon. Virtually anything is possible here, where you get to be the star in a fantasy uniquely your own.
