Why We Like This Place

Tucked between the Santa Monica foothills and the ocean in upscale Pacific Palisades lies a hidden treasure: the Riviera Country Club, a historic venue with a long tradition of high-class entertaining. Since its opening in 1926, Riviera’s posh comforts and championship golf course (the site of the Northern Trust Open) have attracted presidents, movie stars and the “Rat Pack” who famously played and partied here. Riviera’s picturesque grounds have even been featured in classic Hollywood films. Though exclusive and private, sponsored nonmembers can also celebrate within its beautiful compound.

Riviera’s majestic clubhouse commands a sweeping view of the park-like course, and both are impeccably maintained. The Mediterranean architecture and 1920s décor exude nostalgic glamour, and the light-filled lobby feels like it’s part of a private estate rather than a country club. For ceremonies, guests take the stairs from the terrace down to the Vista Riviera, a gorgeous expanse of manicured lawn on a gentle rise overlooking the greens. Crowning the scene is an ornate wrought-iron gazebo, especially stunning when embellished with showy blooms. Couples say their vows against the breathtaking backdrop of tree-laced fairways, with the sea and sky melding together in two blue layers on the horizon. Just below them is the 18th hole, which frequently makes Top 10 lists for best finishing holes in the world. If we were to name our Top 10 ceremony sites, then the magical Vista Riviera would certainly make that list, too.

Cocktail hours are held on the clubhouse’s broad tiled terrace. From this lofty vantage, guests enjoy spectacular sunsets and a glorious coastal panorama. Receptions unfold in your choice of two spaces. The resplendent Crystal Ballroom is named for the original crystal chandeliers suspended from a dramatic coved ceiling. A marble-mantled fireplace at one end matches the gleaming marble floor, perfect for dancing. Lofty Deco-style French windows open to the terrace and cool ocean breezes. Larger galas are supremely elegant in the Grand Ballroom, whose Spanish Revival aesthetic is expressed in arched entryways, high ceilings with dark wood beams and antique chandeliers. From its private terrace, the ballroom captures a superb view of the 1st fairway and neighboring Tennis Club.

The intimate George C. Thomas Room, with mahogany-paneled walls, crystal chandeliers and an antique fireplace, evokes a cozy, sophisticated ambiance that’s just right for rehearsal dinners or bridal teas. An expansive bay window frames views and a private terrace adds versatility.

At Riviera, events aren’t an afterthought; they’re a focus. The full-service club hosts only one event per day, and is dedicated to providing “The Riviera Experience”: personalization and customization of each event along with stellar service. They even offer optional in-house floral design and event coordination, from concept to execution. Their expert coordinators have special relationships (read: special pricing) with the cream of local vendors, and can arrange statement-making upgrades such as white-gloved synchronized service. They’re also prepared with a backup ceremony site in case of unfavorable weather.

While Riviera’s acclaimed chef is known for his mouthwatering cuisine, the club also welcomes kosher and other ethnic foods prepared by outside caterers. And here’s something else not often found at country clubs—overnight accommodations, including a complimentary bridal suite. With an on-site restaurant serving three meals a day, there’s no reason not to bask in Riviera’s gracious hospitality for as long as possible.

CEREMONY CAPACITY: The site holds 275 seated guests indoors and 500 seated outdoors. EVENT/RECEPTION CAPACITY: The club can accommodate 250 seated or 350 standing guests indoors, and 250 seated or 500 standing outdoors. MEETING CAPACITY: Meeting spaces hold up to 350 seated guests.

Fees & Deposits

A $5,000 deposit is required to reserve your date. A portion is due 90 days prior to the event and the balance is due 10 days prior. Rental fees range $1,000–2,500 depending on the time of the event and the space rented. Packages range $225–300/person. Tax, alcohol and a 21% service charge are included. Riviera Country Club requires the use of a professional coordinator for weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs. For an additional fee starting at $2,500, Riviera Country Club provides an in-house professional coordinator who will work with you from concept design through the day of your event.
