Redondo Beach Historic Library

Why We Like This Place

Book lovers that we are, it was a foregone conclusion that the Redondo Beach Historic Library would capture our hearts. Whether you’re a bibliophile or not, however, the library is bound to appeal to you and all who walk through its impressive double wooden doors.

Local architect Lovell Pemberton built the library in 1930, positioning it to command a view of both the Pacific and the sprawling lawn of Veterans’ Park.

Combining both Spanish and Dutch colonial styles, the library is a handsome three-story ivory stucco building with arched windows, a red tile roof and straight-edged gables peaking on its north and south wings. Ornamental ironwork on the windows and Art Deco moldings on the front façade spice up the architectural mix still further. Shading the library is its gorgeous companion—a giant Moreton Bay Fig, itself a registered landmark.

Guests stepping out onto the library’s main floor will undoubtedly be a little in awe of the expansive, illumined space that greets them. With windows set in almost every wall and skylights opening up the ceiling, the main floor is radiant in light—ideal for large celebrations. Cream-colored walls offset by a dusky burgundy-and-blue carpeting impart a simple elegance. Overhead, arches and dark wood beams echo the Spanish motif. Although renovated throughout, some of the library’s original amenities remain, namely the circular brass lamps suspended from the ceiling and the wooden bookshelves bracketing three walls—an excellent showcase for memorabilia, pictures, votive candles or flowers.

Most couples say their vows during sunset’s lavish light, in front of a quartet of ocean-facing windows on the main floor. Other possible ceremony sites include the long stretch of lawn directly behind the library or on the Veterans’ Park concert green, situated on the building’s north side. If it’s a more intimate fte you’re hosting—perhaps a communion or baby shower—then you’ll want to reserve one of the library’s smaller spaces: either the overflow room or the third floor mezzanine, which also affords a glorious ocean view.

Since its opening in 1996 as an event venue, the library has proved to be one of the most popular event facilities in Redondo Beach, booking almost every weekend. Call to make an appointment to visit this site, and chances are you’ll sign their dance card too.
