First-time visitors to Palm Garden Hotel are always pleasantly surprised to discover this suburban oasis tucked amidst a busy commercial district a mere minute from the 101. The hustle and bustle instantly melts away once you step inside the marble-clad lobby, where you’re greeted by an electronic grand piano playing familiar tunes. This is your first taste of Palm Garden’s arts and music motif: Veteran Big Band leader Harry Selvin purchased the boutique hotel in 2012, and began a loving transformation that has all the hallmarks of pride of ownership. From grounds to guest rooms, the jazzy décor reflects an Old Hollywood vibe that’s both jaunty and elegant.

The hotel is built around a sun-washed garden courtyard that encircles a sparkling swimming pool and spa, with plush loungers and cabanas beckoning from the pool deck. Landscaped pathways pass a whimsical bronze statue of a trio of child musicians that’s sure to bring a smile. Continue on to two hospitality suites that serve as basecamp for your wedding weekend. The guys gather in the Hollywood Suite, where a legendary pool table once belonging to late comedian George Burns holds court in the front room. Framed black & white photos of Burns’ celebrity billiard buddies line one wall, a testament to their having played on—and autographed—this very table. Two flatscreen TVs, a bar, kitchen and bedroom enhance the suite’s fun factor, as does the putting green just outside.

Meanwhile, the bride and her attendants prepare in the lovely Garden Suite, which includes a comfortably furnished living room, kitchen, and garden-view bedroom (where the newlyweds spend their wedding night). Brides especially appreciate the roomy walk-in closet and makeup area, as well as the window that lets them watch the guests taking their seats for the ceremony on the Garden Lawn. This lush setting, sheltered by greenery, palm trees and trellises entwined with bougainvillea and fragrant jasmine, is pure romance. A built-in wedding aisle ends at a spacious white wood gazebo. Trimmed with fairy lights and white roses, it’s a picturesque backdrop for exchanging vows.

Afterwards, guests stroll over to the Garden Room and Patio for cocktails. The bar is usually set inside the cheerful, airy space, which is also a popular choice for bridal showers and rehearsal dinners. Keep the French doors open and the party flows out onto the patio, where cushioned seating clustered around copper-lined fire pits invites conversation.

Receptions are held in the Palm Ballroom, outfitted with whitewashed shutters, potted palms and abstract chrome fixtures, all of which create a breezy sophistication. Catering is provided by the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Brendan’s Irish Pub, known for its fine food. Their chefs can whip up delicious dishes in a range of culinary styles—just ask! Brendan’s semi-private dining room, featuring rich dark woods and folksy Irish décor, is another rehearsal dinner option.

Palm Garden Hotel makes it easy to gather loved ones (and their pets!) under one roof for an extended celebration, from welcome cocktails to day-after brunch.
