Why We Like This Place
Seldom does Old Hollywood meet New Hollywood as spectacularly as at the Oviatt Penthouse, an exclusive 12th-story aerie of Art Deco splendor. Once the private residence of James Oviatt, the dapper haberdasher behind the building of this 1927 landmark, the penthouse now lends its sophisticated elegance—and a 360-degree view of the downtown L.A. skyline—to weddings and other special events.
The moment you enter the building’s lobby, you get a hint of what awaits you in the Penthouse. Many of the glass and metal fea-tures you see here—the windows, doors, pillars and ceiling—are the work of the famous Parisian glassmaker, René Lalique. His genius is also evident in the Penthouse’s light fixtures and glasswork. The elevator that whisks you up to the 12th floor might as well be a time machine, because when the doors open and you step into the Penthouse foyer, you find yourself in another world, one that’s a virtual time capsule from the 1930s.
As you and your guests wander among the Penthouse’s seven rooms, notice the extraordinary details: the arched hallway ceiling, painted like a starry night sky and edged with Lalique light fixtures; the autographed photos of Mr. Oviatt’s wonderfully dressed movie star clients; the Saddier et Fils Art Deco bar in the dining room; the living room’s parquet floor fashioned from precious woods; and the bathroom, which has a sunken marble tub and glazed terracotta tiles etched with a palm-leaf design. The entire penthouse is incredibly sensual and tactile, tempting you to stroke the rose-colored, velvet-covered chairs and the cool surface of the marble fireplace. Even the powder room’s commode and lavatory basin are veneered in burled maple and upholstered with cut velvet.
As though all this weren’t enough, the splendor extends to the outdoors as well on the terrace. This breathtaking space has a slightly Moorish feel, with a colorful tiled fountain and arabesques of wrought iron adorning staircases and rooftops. A Spanish-tiled stairway leads you up to the Martini Lounge, a chic new area for up to 25 guests. Formerly just an observation deck that had been closed to the public for 15 years, it’s now outfitted with couches, draperies and dramatic uplighting. This is the place to host an intimate private party on a warm summer night, with the glittering city spread out beneath you—especially if you enhance the space with gobos, twinkle lights or other mood lighting.
Truly Yours Catering, the company handling events at the Penthouse, has been working with the Los Angeles Conser-vancy to preserve the space, returning some of the original antiques, and repainting the interior. They’ve also built their own kitchen on site so that all their fabulous food arrives the way it was prepared: fresh and hot.
In addition to being a one-of-a-kind location for weddings, rehearsal dinners and brunches, the Penthouse has become a prime spot for bridal mixers (where brides meet each other over drinks and desserts and share ideas) and seminars (free events where brides can meet with wedding vendors). Check with Truly Yours to find out what’s scheduled!
The Oviatt Penthouse is truly an extraordinary venue that makes an indelible impression on everyone who sees it, so no matter what event you host at this “castle in the air” it’s bound to be unforgettable.
