Why We Like This Place
With the congenial ambiance of a lively social center and the endearing appeal of historic California architecture, the Monterey Country Club both welcomes and charms its visitors. The seduction begins at the clubhouse entrance, where tidy hedges and multicolored floral tableaux adorn a pretty plaza. As you admire the building’s Old World façade, edged in dark wood and the traditional red tile roof, you’re soothed by the sound of water cascading down a triple-tiered fountain inlaid with Spanish tiles. Arched front doors of sturdy oak gracefully invite you to enter.
The Monterey Lobby could pass for the tasteful drawing room of an Early California land baron. You’ll be particularly impressed by an immense wrought-iron candelabra-style chandelier that hangs from a cathedral wood-beam ceiling. Chairs face a soaring cut-stone fireplace, ablaze in wintertime and scenting the air with a piquant, woodsy aroma. Rich oriental carpets and plush furnishings infuse a classic elegance into all the public spaces. On Saturday evenings the clubhouse is reserved for private functions, allowing you to make this glorious entrance hall an integral part of your event. For example, the mezzanine with its carved wood balustrade is an inspired spot from which to toss the wedding bouquet!
An open floor plan has the Lobby flowing into the spacious Main Dining Room. Though Spanish-style décor usually tends to be dark and heavy, the Monterey interiors are awash in soft and creamy hues. Yet it’s the view through the row of arched windows that really makes your reception sparkle: Acres of grass spread before you into the distance; a crystal-blue lake glints in the sunlight, while the snow-capped San Jacinto mountains make an enduring statement in the background. Both the Dining Room and the Sunrise Room next door bring the delicious vista up close and personal. Double doors between the two banquet rooms allow you to use them together for a lavish gala, or individually; perhaps stage your entertainment and dancing in the Sunrise, or reserve it for a view-filled ceremony in inclement weather. At the other end of the Dining Room, the club’s just-renovated Lounge also has a fireplace, as well as a long granite-topped bar for your cocktail hour; a shaded outdoor patio means guests are free to meander outside to enjoy their champagne in the open air.
And it’s usually the great outdoors that brings bridal couples to the desert, dreaming of a sun-kissed ceremony that unfolds in the lap of Nature. Monterey’s two enchanting ceremony sites don’t disappoint. On Nine West and One West, sweeps of manicured lawn stretch to the opposite shores of the lake, accented with a spraying fountain. Giant palms, luxuriant foliage and mature trees gather lakeside, and ducks play hide and seek among languid willow branches. Songbirds come to drink at the water’s edge before taking flight into the clear blue sky. Then, as the rosy hues of sunset begin to bloom on the horizon, you’ll feel as if the desert were speaking to you in a timeless whisper.
At the Monterey Country Club the service is courteous and professional, and the event packages are easy on the wallet—which makes the beguiling scenery all the more amazing!
