Why We Like This Place
Since it first came onto the scene in 1963, Matteo’s in West L.A. has been the epitome of cool. Maybe it was because Frank Sinatra—an old pal of Matty “Matteo” Jordan’s from back home in Hoboken—often came to dinner along with his rat pack crowd. Maybe it was the great Italian food, served in an upscale supper club atmosphere. Or maybe it was just because no matter who you were, you were greeted like a friend as you enjoyed your dinner next to a Who’s Who of Hollywood movers and shakers. What’s amazing is that more than 40 years and a whole new generation later, the restaurant, recently renovated, still has that winning combination of homey and hip.
Their unique wedding spot, dubbed The Townhouse, gives you that same feeling in a city sophisticated way. Head up the private stairs and it’s as if you’ve arrived at a chic New York brownstone. The first thing that greets your guests is a smart little lounge, complete with its own bar, where they can check in. The entire upstairs is yours to enjoy, so you can create whatever flow works best for you. Perhaps you’d like to start by inviting everyone out to the rooftop terrace for an open-air ceremony or cocktail reception. The tile floor and textured plaster walls embellished with green latticework panels give this cosmopolitan space a country charm. Huge planters with flowering shrubs and a weathered lion’s head fountain set into a niche in the wall add to the sense of an in-town getaway.
When you’re ready for dinner, the French doors will be opened to reveal the Townhouse Dining Room, decorated like a spacious penthouse drawing room. This lovely venue takes full advantage of both natural and reflected light: A pale blue, barrel ceiling features a skylight as well as drop chandeliers, and the mirror over a beautifully crafted antique hutch shimmers behind an array of flickering candles.
The Townhouse menu includes all the great Italian fare from the restaurant downstairs, and the chef is also quite open to whipping up innovative ethnic or cultural dishes on request. After dinner, continue your festivities with dancing al fresco under the stars as well as hundreds of twinkling lights strung overhead.
In addition to all its other assets, one of The Townhouse’s greatest perks is that the resident event manager will work with you from your initial consultation to the end of your event, making sure the space fits your needs and your vision. Very cool.
