Malibu Nature Preserve

Why We Like This Place

The Malibu Nature Preserve is a private coastal retreat with the relaxed atmosphere of an early California ranch. Once you’re here, you’re enveloped by nature: the ocean on one side, Yosemite-like canyons on the other and, on many evenings, a brilliant sunset followed by a dusting of stars in the night sky. Breathe in the spicy aroma of fresh earth mingled with the briny sea air, and just imagine the possibilities.

Located at the Malibu Riding & Tennis Club and the adjoining Nicholas Canyon, the Malibu Nature Preserve was recently acquired by the Nature Trust of the Santa Monica Mountains, whose goal is to save this endangered wilderness. The creek, the sycamore grove, the renovated clubhouse, the labyrinth of hiking trails that wind through dramatic arroyos, and the historic Chumash caves have all been safeguarded for public use, as well as your own memorable celebration.

On the mountain side of Pacific Coast Highway, you pass through an entrance of iron gates and up a treelined drive. To the left, on the bank of a trickling creek, a manicured lawn shaded by a grove of sycamore trees is a delightful site for an outdoor wedding ceremony; couples can’t resist saying their vows on a small stage beneath a canopy of graceful branches. This is also the spot to kick off your company picnic or family reunion, and your guests will enjoy exploring the acres of picturesque grounds. And if your heart’s desire is to tie the knot with sand between your toes, you’ll be thrilled to know that you can have your ceremony at the nearby beaches and then return to the Nature Preserve for your reception.

Both casual and formal festivities are held in the clubhouse, a rustic building on a small rise overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is an air of unpretentious sophistication about the clubhouse: Local artists’ landscapes line the walls of the main room, dominated by a stone fireplace; the open beam ceilings and the long L-shaped oak bar in the adjoining lounge would be at home in a mountain lodge. Light filtered through the surrounding trees streams in through French doors. Open them, and your guests can stroll out onto the adjacent patio to enjoy cocktails around the solar-heated swimming pool.

Around the corner from the bar is a brick-and-windows Solarium with a petite wall fountain tucked into one corner; the Solarium opens onto an expansive clay-tiled terrace and a spectacular view of the serene Pacific as it rolls into shore. The clubhouse’s various event spaces—main room, cocktail lounge, solarium, deck, and poolside—can each be set for a seated meal, buffet, cocktails, or dancing. However you choose to arrange your event, you will find the staff more than accommodating.

Having an event at the Preserve is doubly rewarding: not only will your guests feel refreshed and exhilarated, but you will get the satisfaction of knowing that each dollar you spend goes toward achieving the goal of the Nature Trust of the Santa Monica Mountains: “to preserve, protect, and enhance our natural resources.”
