Why We Like This Place
For all you hipsters out there, here’s the scoop on Bixby Knolls’ Long Beach Petroleum Club: This is a totally copasetic place for just about any event you can think of—anniversary party, wedding reception, bar/bat mitzvah, corporate bash, or quinceañera. The club is a treasure trove of 70s architecture and décor that will have you snapping your fingers and reaching for a martini, straight up, no chaser.
As we enter the building, our eyes adjust to the low-lit pre-reception area, where a cool stone wall takes us back to another living room, er…time. We’re tempted to sink into the comfy chairs and reach for the remote and a TV dinner. But there’s much more in store.
Down the hall is The Terrace Room, with its retro color scheme and built-in stage for your favorite entertainment. Decorative wood molding lends a picture-frame look to the walls, adorned with faux-candle sconces. Behind the pleated mauve bar, an exquisite antique brass-and-turquoise enamel mirror captures our attention. We sit before it, envisioning a generation of elaborately coiffed socialites checking their hair before heading back to their partners.
Outside, an Olympic-size swimming pool (the only one in Long Beach) and generous deck look pretty appealing in the summer heat. Here, the club commonly hosts lively barbecues, nighttime swims and movies. We can picture all our friends and family relaxing in lounge chairs, splashing in the water and partaking of grilled chicken, barbecued ribs and a generous helping of potato salad.
We head back inside for the VIP service in the exclusive Members’ Dining Room. Settling into the button-tufted, red leather booths, we’re immediately primed for an intimate dining experience: The outside light filters through colorful, bottle-glass windows. The walls, light fixtures, and tablecloths are the same deep red, giving the room an air of hushed sophistication. We wonder when the cigars and brandy will arrive.
Speaking of brandy, we saunter over to the notorious Circular Bar and take a seat on the upholstered stools. Contemporary lighting gives the space a hint of casino glitz. We can almost hear Frankie crooning. Etched-glass art catches the light, while we peruse the vintage oil industry signs hung on the walls of the adjoining pub area.
Our next stop is the Grand Ballroom, which is outfitted with a very large permanent dance floor. The first thing we notice is the room-length, full-color mural of the oil fields of Signal Hill circa 1925. This vast work of art depicts oil rigs, classic cars, and the California sunset above the blue Pacific. Crystal chandeliers give the room a warm glow, making it easy to picture the space filled with linen-clad tables, lots of laughter and soft music. Back in the 50s and 60s, entertainers like Etta James, Buddy Epstein, and the Ink Spots performed on the professional stage.
When our tour ended, we felt we’d seen a truly one-of-a-kind venue. But classic décor and singular style aren’t all you’ll find here. This full-service banquet facility offers catering at affordable prices, plus a convenient location off the 405 freeway. So have some fun—throw on the chiffon and head back to the Swanky Seventies at The Long Beach Petroleum Club.
